It's easy to do, just like adding a normal hard drive, although you may need an adapter as SSDs are typically smaller than a regular hard disk also a lot of the SSDs come with cloning software to allow you to copy over your existing OS

Another thing to consider is putting it where your optical drive goes, again, you may need an adaptor, then you can use an external optical drive if you need to

'I need to get around to swapping the drive for an SSD'

I'm considering this on an old Asus machine I've got, which I'm planning some other repairs on. Any idea how complicated this is to do and, if I have to get someone else to do it how much should I expect to pay ?

I actually really like Windows 10, works great on my HP. I never quite understand the attraction of Linux, Ubuntu, etc. Obviously for the more technically enlightened than me.

I have 2 HP laptops that were formerly Windows, but now run Linux. It's dead easy. I just ordered an Intel nuc plus 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD, and I'll be putting Linux on that too.
I want to buy another laptop, but I want 17 inch touch screen, and they are hard to get.

Don't know why anyone would have a mare stripping Windows 10 out to put Ubuntu on, you just boot up with the Ubuntu disk and use GParted to wipe the partition clean with one click

We have HP stuff at the project office - mainly because our parent company owns whoever makes them these days.

That being said, the laptop I have is the absolute bollocks and I'm well impressed. I'd have bought one myself apart from the fact that they're a shade under 2 bags of sand.

I went for an Acer in the end - an upgrade on my previous laptop. I need to get around to swapping the drive for an SSD and maxing out the RAM (32G apparently) but I'm happy with the bangs per buck it gives. Had a 'mare stripping the pre-installed Windows 10 right out and replacing it with Ubuntu, but I doubt if your looking for THAT Geeky - unless you're looking, too, at non-windows solutions for your editing..

I've always used other people for the likes of video editing, but I have heard about this LumaFusion app before, supposed to be the bollocks.

Thanks for advice so far. I possibly want too much for the money in terms of video editing.

I like the look of the iPad Pro and would use it a lot. For video editing though it seems final cut (macs) or adobe pro (windows) are the best fit for what I need. IPad Pro doesn't have either and not really a video editor as such.

One more thing, a factor in me choosing HP was I heard very good things from professional local IT types about the servicing they provide should something go awry. This can vary depending on where you're based, defo worth checking out.

Re: Computer geeks laptop advice
Went through a similar thing last year to get a laptop for my old boy. After a fair bit of research I got an HP 250 G5. For that price range most sites were recommending it as the best option in its class.

Managed to get a core i5 processor, 128 GB SSD, 8 GB ram, decent screen, for about 500 Euros. I have to say it's been really excellent. You can get the same model now with a better spec for a similar price.

One caveat: I just use if for regular Windows based stuff (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) plus the usual internet stuff, definitely not video editing for which I'd have thought a Mac more suitable. At that price, though, what sort of Mac are you going to get your hands on ?

My work have given us a brand new Surface Pro for when I am called out I can fix the crash at home rather than coming into the office… I can honestly say with all my heart that Surface Pros are an absolute and utter piece of fucking shit…. If I had actually paid any money for it I would have killed the shop assistant in Curry’s and then Killed myself… so my advice is Stay away from Surface Pros… they are shit… thanks

Re: Computer geeks laptop advice
I rarely recommend, all I'll suggest is pop along to PC World and explain to them what it is you want the laptop for. Despite many opinions on here from fellow IT workers, they can advise you as each of us has a preference as some would say get a HP, others, who have had a bad experience with HP will tell you to avoid HP.

It also comes down to personal choice. Failing that go on the "Which" website and see what they recommend.

Not quite that video editing spandex. I guess you need a big hard drive for that load.

Gregan,

Many Windows laptops on the market in that price bracket will do what you need, I would steer clear of a 6 year old Mac.
