Fans doing the 'crossed Hammers' sign
|
I started going to West Ham in the late 80s and, throughout the 90s and early 2000s, I have no recollection of anyone doing the 'crossed hammers' salute - neither fans nor players.
Nowadays everyone is doing it.
Is this a new thing, or an old thing?

I was always told the Sunday morning football scene was based upon something the Towners done to Millwall or Arsenal.
I cant imagine many wearing blazers to an away match!

The owners are scum full stop
They try to be likeable by "stealing" ideas like crossed arms and using Bobby Moore in their merchandise to be popular with the fans
It has a complete opposite affect and makes them look desperate

Stuart Slater and Eamonn Dolan first on camera at Chadwell Heath photo shoot, very early 90's. ( In case anyone missed the link to the picture).

I always thought it came from "The Firm" with Gary Oldman, if not it took off from there onward.

Remember seeing John Jo Shelvey do it at Millwall after scoring for Blackpool, made me laugh. But it is cringe, all the rage in Kent and Essex with them mongs who follow us.

Soon as the owners did it and it was on the merchandise it lost any credibility it had.
Mind you the change in demographic in the fan base , we might be better with some hand sign that represents a prawn sandwich. And seeing the latest report on the price of footie and the growing number of tourist fans , the Thames Ironworks link will be forgotten before you know it.
Brady will introduce a new sign where she puts her ankles behind her ears which works on a couple of levels. For us fans it is to ensure we are ready for being royally shafted over and over.

Freddie Sears did it about 10 years ago when he scored on his Hammers debut.
Not sure we ever got to see him to it again mind you!

I started this off in the late 70s early 80s but back in the good old days when I crossed my arms in the hammers way a castle shone through behind them and no sign of the word "London" anywhere!!!

I hadn't seen that before, but that confirms Chris Powell wasn't the first, and for now Slater has the (dubious?) honour of first doing it.
