They Played For John Lyall : The West Ham Years
a new book by Tim Crane, in which he interviews seventy six of the seventy seven players to represent the club during John's time as manager, the players share stories of working under the great man. its a superb book and I'd highly recommend it

Mine came from Amazon within a couple of days of ordering it. Their website said there was only one copy left.

Itchy beard on that one, I think.

If I get time when I get back to the UK I might try and get it signed by a few of the players.

Very true Mike and it is a fact that there is no one actually at the club these days who could have come up with such a masterpiece.

Ordered and will be waiting for me when I get back to the UK.

A far better addition to my West Ham memorabilia than ANY of the tat the club currently peddle.

Don't think anyone saw that one coming Mike and it was a move that didn't turn out that well for Ollie who was close to an England cap when he was with us.

As an aside he is a really nice guy.

I don't think he was ill as such because I remember reading that the heart attack that killed him at 66 came out of the blue although I also remember reading that there had been a history of heart disease in the family.

I think he was extremely hurt by the sacking though at West Ham. I think he probably just got fed up with football. I can't imagine a manager of such integrity working today with all these agents, player entourages and managers sniping all the time.

I remember reading that after his sacking he sent a hand written letter to all players and staff thanking them for their service etc. And Terry Venables I think it was said he offered John some scouting when Venables was England Manager and he was dumbstruck when Lyall handed him this large hand written dossier on the opponents.

Mr West Ham for me.

we still had Paul Allen too when the decision was made so John clearly didn't see him leaving to join the scum

Re: They Played For John Lyall : The West Ham Years
Saw him play in the youth side a couple of times and the promise was clearly there. There were several raised eyebrows when the club let him go and they should have got him back when he did well at Fulham.

Re: They Played For John Lyall : The West Ham Years
Brooking was way past his peak then. What actually happened is TB had been injured and having played in the reserves to get back to fitness he recognised that Houghton was good and told Lyall his opinion. Latterly he also told him he could not believe he had been sold. The thinking behind it was that Dickens/Devonshire still had many years ahead of them and that Houghton was not needed.

terry, I knew he'd played a few games before signing for Liverpool but not as many as the combined 200+ he had played for Fulham & Oxford

Re: They Played For John Lyall : The West Ham Years
Alvin Martin talked about Ray Houghton's release on Talksport once. He couldn't believe Houghton wasn't given a new contract and stormed into Lyall's office. Lyall defended himself by saying the decision had been democratically arrived at. He, and his two assistants Mick Mcgiven and Ron Boyce had voted 2-1 against keeping him. Alvin was furious and tried in vain to change his mind. I think it was because Brooking and Devonshire were still at their peak that Lyall couldn't fit Houghton into the side and wanted to be fair to him. I don't think many people predicted how good Houghton would be become in his later career.

Re: They Played For John Lyall : The West Ham Years
Looking back its surprising that Lyall was only 49 when he got the bullet, he seemed to me then, as a sixteen year old, as a wise old grandfather figure but he was still young in football management terms. It's a shame his career ended just five years later but perhaps ill health had already taken hold?

My MATE was in the youth team with Incey (and Potts) and was in the changing room when the old Bill called.... Incey hung around with a load of scrotes from Ilford who loved a rob up... IIRC this one was for a OAP home that got done over... a couple of the lads done some borstal and Incey was lucky as fuck to get away with it thanks to Lyall... one thing that happened after that incident was that JL took Incey under his wing...

Imagine one of our youth close to earning millions being told to paint the gates, how would Oxford take that?
