Gordon Banks at 80
I know he wasn't one of us but there's a nice interview about his career here. Moore and Hurst get a mention.

Oh, and Mods, why no World Cup icon? We did win it, after all.

I was also there, but I didn't see it! People around me jumped up expecting a goal, and obscured my view.

Sadly it was about this time of the year he was in the Car Crash that ended his career.

Indeed. It's a different world mate.

Alan Mullery's recollection of the Pele save is legendary. First to go up to pat him on the back afterwards he apparently said "catch it next time".

Re: Gordon Banks at 80
He said in his Sun article that he knew the bounce from Pele's header as he had practiced for yonks on rock hard pitches... knew how it was going to rise up and how much of a hand he would get on it... got to admit still looks impossible what he did

Absolutely read about that many times and bizarrely I never think badly of Ron Greenwood for doing that,. "Integrity" a long gone word in Football.

Northern Sold ~

I was in the old North Bank right behind the goal when Hurst hit that penalty against Stoke

He couldn't have hit it harder or better (I wouldn't like to have got in the way of it!)

It was some save that Banksie made, but to be honest, his save against Pele was just impossible

Dug out the book I got him to sign when he talked at my son's school - I brought along my (already signed by Sir Geoff) Hurst's World Champions .. he signed it twice ... one a great photo of him and Bobby with the World Cup and also dedicated it at front to me. Lovely man

Re: Gordon Banks at 80
Excellent piece in the Sun about the great man... he reckons his save from Hurst's penalty in the semi final was better than the Pele header...

Always comes across as being a genuinely nice bloke

Englands best ever goalie by a margin. Can't ever recall him making a mistake (though I'm sure he must have done sometime)

And to think he would have been ours if Ron Greenwood wasn't a man who believed in keeping his word.

Reckon he’d still get down to his left better than Joe Hart.

I met him only this year and while frail he had a great sense of humour and was happy to take time to pose for photos and sign stuff. Was at a talk at my son's school and was such a gent

"Moore and Hurst get a mention."

That long ball from Moore to Hurst was anything but hoofball.

I wish the current West Ham had that option

"That save".

Two everyday English words, yet, used together, virtually the whole (sporting) world understands exactly what they mean and who they refer to.

I don't think you can get a higher accolade.

Or more deserved - it IS/WAS an amazing piece of football.
