Winter River fishing in Essex, Kent or Herts
Do you have any suggestions of good places to visit for some winter river fishing for this weekend?

Thanks

About twenty years ago the canal at Mile End had one of the densest populations of fish of any waterway in the country when it was netted

Are there any fish in the canals around Stratford and Mile End.

In my day it was just mouldy old sticklebacks.

That will be The Dog and Duck, probably changed a bit since the seventies

Plucks Gutter, eh?

Caught my first bream there, my first roach, and my first hybrid - a fucking long time ago, circa 1973 or so, I guess. Cycled there from Canterbury on a 5-speed Dawes I bought for a fiver and a Penthouse. Forgot the name of the pub but a couple of years later bought my first pint there when I was about 16 or so. Landlord didn't give a monkey's arse how old you were if you fished.

A place I would like to go back to and visit. Probably find everything very narrow, shallow and expensive, LOL

As a waterborne bird I'd have expected you to know that

What's this about rivers being closed until
March? First I've heard of it

Kentish Stour at Plucks Gutter, plenty of silvers and Pike in there, free fishing in Canterbury centre and you'll get Chub there too

Level is very high at the moment on my local BDAC stretch of the Wid. I don't think it will subside enough by the weekend to make it worthwhile, even if there's no further rainfall. The ground is full saturation at the moment.

The Wid is very narrow so rises and falls quickly so it can be hard to time it just right especially in summer when level is low and water is clear.

Be mobile along my stretch and you should catch a chub or two, there's a few trout in there as well. Roach, dace, the very occasional tench, the odd eel. Too many pesky minnows and of course the Easties long line it in summer and there's otters galore.

Still more fun than sitting at a lake catching overfed pet goldfish with names.
