The development of black players in the UK
Cyrille Regis's sad death brought into focus how few black players there were 40 years ago, when I was a schoolboy. We played once against Spurs youth (including Graeme Souness) and there was not a single black player in their team. At my school there was a Nigerian lad who was a good dribbler and hard as nails if you collided with him, but he could not pass well or shoot at all. That was the reputation then of home-based black footballers - athletic and powerful but short on technique. West Ham fans generally thought that way of Clyde Best. Regis seemed to fit in that mould and it was only the likes of Cunningham and John Barnes that changed that perception.

Do they still have Asian football leagues in the UK?? Never got my head around that... we used to play Cricket against a couple of Asian teams (Young Muslims and Becontree I think they were called)... good tough games as well ... the teas were a bit bland mind you!

My point is that the FA commissioned a report about why there aren't any Indian origin players in the professional game about 10 years back, cos there just has to be a racist reason why there isn't.
As if a lower league club would give a fuck about the colour of a players skin these days.

"Whatever happened to Ade Coker? Wasn't he brilliant first game then never hot the heights again?"

I often wondered this.

But I heard that he's recently been found in the labyrinthine corridors of the Boleyn Ground basement, which are now accessible only through a manhole cover on Green Street.

Sorry didn’t finish that post....

.....20 boys, 16 of whom were Asian, 4 white.....3 whites were selected for further trials with 1 asian.

I find it amusing that football bears the brunt of accusations of institutional racism in British sport when cricket is miles ahead.

It’s only in the last 25 years that home grown Asian players have been given any sort of a look in despite a much higher proportion of lads from that community play the game in this country than any other race.

Growing up in Ilford I remember a mate of mine being iput forward by local schools for a trial for Essex CC made up of 20 boyslocal

Re: The development of black players in the UK
Ironic that the reputation of hpme based black players in the early 70's was that they couldn't pass or shoot

PERHAPS WATCHING THE 1970 WORLD CUP WOULD HAVE MADE PEOPLE REALISE THAT BLACK PEOPLE COULD PLAY FOOTBALL GIVEN A CHANCE

Still Ron Noades of Palace was still saying in the 1990's that you needed white players to do the thinking for the black ones

Technically the Charles brothers were mixed race. As white as they were black.

I was sure it was Palace but there you go.

On April Fools' Day 1972, to be precise - Ron Greenwood's West Ham United beat Tottenham 2-0 in a London derby with a team that featured three young black players - 21-year-old Clyde Best, Clive Charles (20) and Ade Coker, who was just 17.
