West Ham bid £4.4million upfront for Leander Dendoncker

West Ham failed to sign Anderlecht star Leander Dendoncker after bidding just £4.4million upfront
West Ham failed to prise Leander Dendoncker away from Anderlecht after they offering just £4.4million up front, it has been claimed.
The Hammers looked to be closing in on the promising 22-year-old midfielder, who has also been strongly linked with Manchester United.
However the move broke down on transfer deadline day and he remains an Anderlecht player despite wanting to join the Hammers
Now Belgian newspaper HLN has lifted the lid on the botched attempt to land one of the country's most talented players, who had missed training on Wednesday in a bid to help complete the deal.
It has been suggested West Ham's initial offer included an up-front payment of just £4.4m with a further £8.75m to follow in the summer.
Anderlecht were not happy with those terms unless Dendoncker had been allowed to remain in Belgium on loan for the season but West Ham wanted him straight away.
Then, despite a second offer being put on the table, Anderlecht decided not to sell him at all with West Ham set to go back for him at the end of the season.

Over a 5 year contract. £22m. They wanted, they said, £25m.
It was a decent "go in" offer and made to look shite by a mischievous press. Whoda thunk it?

Will we be able to buy him for £4.4mn in the Summer window, immediately loan him out to Villa and get a player of the stature of Robert Snodgrass the season after?

Dendonker is a very good example of why you shouldn't get too excited about a youtube compilation video.

I agree totally. I used to go to UP 7 or 8 times a season no matter what was going on but since we left I haven't been once to the new stadium. Just don't fancy it and can't be arsed with the board or the team. Years ago I wouldn't have suggested empty seats as being the best protest because it could affect the players who cared for the Club but who is there now? Noble, Reid maybe, Collins and Rice who probably deep down realise it's an absolute disaster anyway but can't publicly say that. The only language these buffoons will understand is if people stop going.

Because that's how transfers work - in installments over a period of years. If it was over 5 years then £5m would have met the newspaper price, which I'm sure they weren't trying to meet.

I think Sullivan plays PR games. He strings agents along knowing they will feed the media desperate for gossip. WH then get media publicity to make it look like they are very active in the market.
Then when real interest comes up and someone says yes OK we're on, the best way to put them off is make a derisory bid...

I don't believe for one second we seriously tried for Dendonckner. Anderlecht initially wanted c£25m and we appear to have offered £4m upfront, now who the hell is going to take that seriously!!
Sad thing is he wanted to come to us, Sullivan simply did what he has done in the past which is to make a totally unacceptable offer. After the Carvalho debacle of last year what club Chairman is ever going to take this idiot and our club seriously?

He was clearly a bit more open on the spot at the press conferance, because he mentioned Dendonker and even though he'd earlier said he wouldn't be drawn on the Tony Henry business during the PC, he was stillø asked questions and still went as far as saying........
"Joseph Yobo I think was my first signing at Everton. I signed Steven Pienaar three times," said Moyes.
"I don't think any Premier League club has more African players than West Ham and we tried to sign two on deadline day.
"We have a multicultural squad and we always try to sign the best players available."
