West Ham failed to sign Anderlecht star Leander Dendoncker after bidding just £4.4million upfront

West Ham failed to prise Leander Dendoncker away from Anderlecht after they offering just £4.4million up front, it has been claimed.

The Hammers looked to be closing in on the promising 22-year-old midfielder, who has also been strongly linked with Manchester United.

However the move broke down on transfer deadline day and he remains an Anderlecht player despite wanting to join the Hammers

Now Belgian newspaper HLN has lifted the lid on the botched attempt to land one of the country's most talented players, who had missed training on Wednesday in a bid to help complete the deal.

It has been suggested West Ham's initial offer included an up-front payment of just £4.4m with a further £8.75m to follow in the summer.

Anderlecht were not happy with those terms unless Dendoncker had been allowed to remain in Belgium on loan for the season but West Ham wanted him straight away.

Then, despite a second offer being put on the table, Anderlecht decided not to sell him at all with West Ham set to go back for him at the end of the season.

I agree totally. I used to go to UP 7 or 8 times a season no matter what was going on but since we left I haven't been once to the new stadium. Just don't fancy it and can't be arsed with the board or the team. Years ago I wouldn't have suggested empty seats as being the best protest because it could affect the players who cared for the Club but who is there now? Noble, Reid maybe, Collins and Rice who probably deep down realise it's an absolute disaster anyway but can't publicly say that. The only language these buffoons will understand is if people stop going.

Because that's how transfers work - in installments over a period of years. If it was over 5 years then £5m would have met the newspaper price, which I'm sure they weren't trying to meet.

I think Sullivan plays PR games. He strings agents along knowing they will feed the media desperate for gossip. WH then get media publicity to make it look like they are very active in the market.

Then when real interest comes up and someone says yes OK we're on, the best way to put them off is make a derisory bid...

Re: West Ham bid £4.4million upfront for Leander Dendoncker
I don't believe for one second we seriously tried for Dendonckner. Anderlecht initially wanted c£25m and we appear to have offered £4m upfront, now who the hell is going to take that seriously!!

Sad thing is he wanted to come to us, Sullivan simply did what he has done in the past which is to make a totally unacceptable offer. After the Carvalho debacle of last year what club Chairman is ever going to take this idiot and our club seriously?

He was clearly a bit more open on the spot at the press conferance, because he mentioned Dendonker and even though he'd earlier said he wouldn't be drawn on the Tony Henry business during the PC, he was stillø asked questions and still went as far as saying........

"Joseph Yobo I think was my first signing at Everton. I signed Steven Pienaar three times," said Moyes.

"I don't think any Premier League club has more African players than West Ham and we tried to sign two on deadline day.

"We have a multicultural squad and we always try to sign the best players available."

Now that strikes me as an unfortunate comment on Moyes' part. It just doesn't appear that we did try that hard to get Amadou.

It was Palace Amadou went to see when he got off the train from Lille on Wednesday night, not us. And even if Amadou wasn't the Cameroonian player Tony Henry was referring to (I suspect he was), how hard can we be trying to recruit Ibrahim Amadou when our Head of Player Recruitment clearly doesn't want to bring in any Africans ?

You sure, canada?

He also said......

"We have enough cover if we get players back. Marko (Arnautovic) is not too far away. We were in for Slimani, but he chose to go to Newcastle. We had interest in Dendonker and Amadou and would have been happy with one, but for whatever reason they didn't come off."

Re: West Ham bid £4.4million upfront for Leander Dendoncker
Interestingly Moyes says in his column today:

"We pushed hard to bring in midfielder Ibrahim Amadou on loan from Lille late in the day but we could not get it over the line before time ran out."

In context of him being the 3rd of the 3 signings he wanted.

But does not mention Dendonker.

True to form by the lying scum that own this club. Make a ridiculous bid that has no hope of being accepted and then say 'we tried'. What about the Russian striker who allegedly wanted to come to us, did we make a pitiful offer for him too?

Just hope we stay up with what we have, heaven help us if there are more injuries. But what of the future, how the hell can we rid ourselves of the garbage in the boardroom?

I've been too disgusted to even open this thread, so all I'm doing now is popping my arse through the door to push out a steaming turd.

That's pretty much what I think of our efforts to sign Dendonker.

Re: West Ham bid £4.4million upfront for Leander Dendoncker
If we were serious then we would have signed him.
He wanted to come, we fucked around all month knowing the fee and underbidding, then left it to the last day of the window and still MASSIVELY underbid. 13m is nowhere near enough.
They did the same with Carvalho. He was never mentioned again, no follow up in Jan. If we were so close why not?
We had the money we were going to spend on WC, add the Sakho and Ayew money, that's 52m. Not saying we should have spent all that but we spent fuck all and didn't put in a serious bid for yet another player / position we desperately still needed.
They will be no follow up on Dendonker in the summer either!
Nothing adds up apart from them being lying cunts with no intention of building a team for the future to take us onwards.

Re: West Ham bid £4.4million upfront for Leander Dendoncker
They rated him at 20 million, probably looking at half now and the rest over the next couple of years. We offered 4 now, so it isn’t much of a surprise that we didn’t get him. Perhaps if we had offered more now, but less than 20 overall they may have relented, either way if we wanted him, an initial 4 million doesn’t suggest we tried too hard to get him.

It’s all about doing it in the cheap with these. Doesn’t matter that we can barely fill the team sheet with names, as long as a few quid is saved.
