Re: Vinegar on a roast- is it normal?
Previously I would have said no, but I've tried it recently (on the potatoes only) and I have to say it was quite agreeable.

Then again I stick creamed horseradish on pretty much anything so my tastes may not be to the liking of most.

Re: Vinegar on a roast- is it normal?
i have tomato sauce on salad, which is really nice, but people seem to think it's wrong, how so? tomato is a fundamental component of a salad, so why not ramp it up a bit

My Mum would roast spuds and then chuck them in the deep fat fryer for a moment giving a crispy outer costing which begged for a drop of Sarsons...my cousin,on the other hand ,would insist on smothering everything he ate in ketchup..when he visited,we'd hide it..

Nothings normal when it comes to food, or what you choose to put on it, I've never tried vinegar on a roast meal but is it vastly different to splashing loads of vinegar over dollops of mash potato and hot pies + parsley sauce?

I meant Cider/balsamic Vinegar with Olive oil and salt goes nice in a well chopped salad with onions, but you must chop the Cucumber Lettuce Tomatoes Onions well small or thin.

I’ve heard of it being used in the cooking process, but not in the eating.

Re: Vinegar on a roast- is it normal?
Er no. Not unless the roast is so bland and inedible. A good gravy is all you need or maybe some mustard.
Vinegar, ketchup and brown sauce aren't usual companions. That said my family have always had Pickled Onions available as an addition to a roast so I guess a roast can be whatever you want it to be and if you like it then why not.

My dad used to put vinegar and pepper on spring greens. I tried it and it tasted OK to be fair

My dad used to put ketchup (or 'red sauce' as he called it) on his roast dinner. It was another of the million petty things my mum hated about him.

My brother used to put ketchup on his roast spuds, the massive big-nosed freak.

If you normally put vinegar on a roast, then YES it is normal.

I wouldn't, but it's a question of personal taste, INNIT.

None of those othe foreign Johnny countries do the humble roast spud do they?

And vinegar on a roast?

What fresh madness is this?

Re: Vinegar on a roast- is it normal?
I get the general idea that the question involved a plastic bottle of Sarson's randomly dowsing a cheap cut of beef, over cooked, with veg boiled to oblivion, Lidl own roast pots and some kind of shithouse gravy slick

In which case yes, to partially mask the grim offering

The delights of a balsamic, roasted root veg side dish will be beyond your compass

Now sir a brooke ran by of cleare water,
And that I turn'd to perfect vinegar
For sauce to that rost-beefe, and the small sand
Was chang'd to perfect pepper
...
And there was as good rost beefe, vinegar, and pepper
As any man in Mantua could desire to eate.

The recipe I described is a Tuscan peasant dish, but the Tuscans are hardly shit at cooking.
