Essex County Cricket Club 2018 Thread
Firstly big thanks to Kips for starting last season's Division 1 Championship winning thread.

Obviously emulating last season's INVINCIBLE 10 wins and 4 draws in red ball is going to be impossible so in a league where 25% of counties go down I'll take a top 4 finish and a trip or two to a white ball final.

Defence of the title begins tomorrow away at Headingley. Thrased the White Rose twice last term, would be good to let them have a bat and skittle them.

#64 SIDDLE in the squad, here for first 5 games until #13 WAGNER returns, I think a decent signing, always respected the effort and grit this attack dog puts in.

COME ON YOU ESSEX BOYS.

As much as we give Australia shit during the Ashes, as individuals they've always fitted in well in English cricket.

I also think their senior players give a lot to the counties; you oiks had at least one Waugh, Lillee at Northants was brilliant, as was Warne at Hampshire. Rackemann was a bit odd because he never learned to bowl an English length, but he still tried his arse off.

If he'd embraced bacon rolls he'd have been in a far better place, but he preferred fucking bean sprouts for breakfast instead.

I played against Merv about 3 times that year. He was good value on and off the pitch.

In a game at Norbury I keep nudging him down to third man, which he wasn't very pleased about. Since I had to run past him every time he gave me an almighty earful each time, and I eventually started giggling.

At the end of the day I was having a piss in the shared toilets, and Merv walked in with a pint for me, and burst out laughing.

OK - sorry

But I'm sure Ray East did it first, but I have zero evidence.

I'll ask him when I see him

The stories from the Essex sides of the late 60s through to the early 80s is what I love about about my county of birth. The characters before the success, the first ever trophy in 1979, and 80s success.

It seems the success came from players that not only played hard, but knew how to enjoy themselves, orchastrated by Keith Fletcher.

Even though he only played 2nd XI cricket, I've read that Merv Hughes loved his season with Essex in 1983.

'Fletcher couldn't get half the team to stop pissing around.'

They pissed around to be the best team of their era...

Thanks to you both.

Didn't Ray East ride a bike going from third man to fine leg, he kept it on the boundary

As LMH says a lunatic

Out last ball before tea and disguised himself as new batsman after the break. Opposition knew of plan to wind up umpire.

Got to crease and said to umpire ''You never actually gave that out, did you?''

Lunatic.

Ray East, the guy who took some of the team away to France on the piss during a game, leaving captain 'Tonker' Taylor wondering where they where?

Re: Essex County Cricket Club 2018 Thread
Ray East was a cunt when he bowled and funny when he batted.

If he'd been in for more than 5 minutes Jack Richards would tell we'd get Sylvester on for him. He'd usually slog one up in the air rapidly.

He was terrified of Sylvester.

No idea; I never had the feeling there was any animosity with Fletcher's team. Probably more issues internally at Essex because Fletcher couldn't get half the team to stop pissing around.

Keith Pont was a bit of a cunt on the pitch, but if you're going to be a cunt, that's where you do it. Ray East was a sneaky cunt.

Presumably Div 1 in 2020, will be like Div 2 this year, in that some teams won't play each other twice?

Could have quite a bearing on who wins the title and who gets relegated.

And yes Northern, I am old enough to remember this used to be the norm in the 17 team, 1 Division CC. Would even itself out over 2 seasons, with no promotion or relegation, unlike now.

I presume he was going anyway but if this thing about the costs is true I think THE HUNDRED might go with him.
Not sure what they've spent already but it was always bonkers.
Always just needed to pump up the county t20 by giving it a time slot of a few weeks so overseas stars can drop in.
Franchises don't work with the counties (its not like the Big Bash where every state has its own matching franchise) let alone this 100 ball and various other made up rules.

Colin Graves is so useless he makes me think Giles Clarke actually knew what he was doing when he got into bed with the Texan ponzi scheme merchant.

The BCCI and the IPL must just piss themselves laughing when they hear about the shit the ECB clowns continually dream up.

Seems it was agreed that Div 1 will be 10 teams in 2020 and Div 2 8 teams.
3 teams to be promoted in 2019 and 1 relegated.

Ha ha ha... BRILLIANT !!! Just scrap it and have ONE Div like the old days...

Sven Roeder 10:59 Fri Sep 28
Re: Essex County Cricket Club 2018 Thread
Understand the ECB Chairman Colin Graves was at The Oval but didn't hand over the trophy to Surrey

Was reading that he was delayed in a HEATED meeting with county chairmen where he had to tell them that the projected costs of this THE HUNDRED piece of genius have gone from £13m to £40m.
And that they were getting LESS MONEY

Seems it was agreed that Div 1 will be 10 teams in 2020 and Div 2 8 teams.
3 teams to be promoted in 2019 and 1 relegated.
