The 2018 French Open, Roland - Garros
...starts tomorrow

Sascha ZVEREV is the choice to challenge king of clay Nadal.
still only 21, he has just won both Munich and Madrid.

the women's game is wide open. i like new young Russian Daria Kasatkina, but Petra KVITOVA has made a brilliant recovery from the horrible knife attack and would be a popular champion
.

Yes he used their rackets his whole career, but he wasn't endorsed by Wilson for a short while, so turned up with a Wilson racket but without branding. There's the difference.

There have been some pretty good matches between Agassi and Sampras

I'd watch Sampras and Lendl over an Agassi game all day long.

i don't care who's the best ever but my favourite player will always be McEnroe, Nadal is the dullest player ever

Agreed, who would you like to see in a final? Sampras and Lendl or McEnroe and Agassi?

For me it's the latter two

Becker and Agassi were charismatic characters with flaws that people warmed to and liked.
Sampras was bland. Am sure he is a nice guy but people found it hard to care whether he won or lost.
That’s the nature of tennis being an individual sport where fans see them up close for hours on end during a match and tournament. They form an opinion on the player based on more than their game.
Do you agree?

Re: The 2018 French Open, Roland - Garros
Becker and Sampras played roughly the same game, Sampras is game was exciting, as was Edbergs.

Agassi was an incredibly boring player, relying on returning the ball and forcing errors.

What you mean is players that kick off and are petulant.

Re: The 2018 French Open, Roland - Garros
Sampras was a great player
But uninspiring as a personality and player ... which in an individual sport matters to fans
Ivan Lendl was the same

Fans react better to players who have something that engages their interest or an exciting style
Like Becker, McEnroe, Connors, Agassi etc

That's funny because everywhere I've looked both on his career and on Wilson, it always says the same thing, he used the Wilson his entire career.

All players have boring tennis matches, it means nothing, as a player he was one of the very best, ever.

The McEnroe era was the best

And just because he was really good, doesn't mean his matches weren't dull as dishwater.

he turned up at wimbledon one year with an unmarked racket.

Ah yes , Agassi
Enjoyed watching him
Was probably thinking of the early part of Agassi’s career when he didn’t play Wimbledon

My memory of that era was that Sampras was great but dull.
Am sure he is a nice bloke but I think fans like a bit of flair and personality
Michael Chang was another worthy but dull EXPONENT from that era.

"I remember one time despite being world number 1, he couldnt get a racket sponsor because he was so dull."

He used the same racket his entire career and was sponsored by Wilson Pro Staff for all of it.

"To me the Sampras era was boring as he was much better than others with no real rivals of note."

I guess you can't call Andre Agassi one of the greats a rival then?

Sampras is one of the most talented players to pick up a racket and unlike Nadal, Djokovic Murrey etc. Played one handed like a man, not two handed like a girl.

Djokovic was a serial failure until he took steroids, then since they were catching up with him and he stopped, is now shit again....

Nadal if you take away the French is has a good record, not great, take away his constant gamesmanship and cheating and it doesn't stand up to much.

Yeah Pee Wee him or Joachim Löw.

Will never forget the first time I went to Rolland Garros, had the mother in law in tow and after much whinging about not being able to get into the main courts (because I had been running late) to see the likes of Yannick Noah and Mats Wilander, we settled to watch two guys Thomas Smid and Ricardo Acuna, I think it was, battle it out on an outside court, She kept moaning these guys are no good neither in the top 50 etc , yet the tennis they served up was beyond belief , I had never realised just how good the players are that are in the top 100, 200 whatever. We watched a five set thriller and Noah Wilander Edberg and Leconte who were the star attractions that day just steamrolled opponents 3-0.

My point is that in the first week at Rolland Garros the outside courts can serve up much better entertainment.

Yes! Sampras was the worst by far.

Boring man
Boring style of play
Boring Wimbledons

I remember one time despite being world number 1, he couldnt get a racket sponsor because he was so dull.

As you say, at least it's great to watch the 'big four' of today play from the POV of a spectacle for the viewers, even if the results are predictable a lot of the time.

The era of Federer, Nadal, Murray & Djokovic is far superior obviously
Just need some of these young guys like Thiem to step up and challenge them

Re: The 2018 French Open, Roland - Garros
Well it’s definitely a better era now than when Djokovic was running around full of god knows what smashing everyone all over the courts.

The tennis has on the whole been great to watch but it’s nice now to have a bit more unpredictability. For the last 3-4 years you could almost predict the semi final line up of any men’s grand slam tournament. Wimbledon could be exciting, although it could just be Federer’s if the other three can’t even show up.
