In July 2018, Musk attempted to provide assistance to rescuers during the Tham Luang cave rescue by ordering his employees to build a "kid-size submarine". Despite efforts, cave rescue officials determined his device impractical and was ultimately not used.[151] Upon criticism from one of the divers, Vernon Unsworth, who was said to have played a "major role" in the rescue, thought that the submarine amounted to nothing more than a "PR stunt", adding that Musk "can stick his submarine where it hurts". Musk reasserted on Twitter that the device would have worked and made an unsubstantiated claim that the diver was a pedophile, referring to him as "pedo guy", causing backlash against Musk.[152][153] He subsequently deleted the tweets, along with an earlier tweet in which he told another critic of the device "Stay tuned jackass".[153] On 16 July, Unsworth stated that he was considering legal action in relation to Musk's comments.[154][155]
After Musk's 'pedo' Tweet, Tesla shares fell 4% as some investors worried about his erratic behavior.[156] Tesla investors subsequently demanded that Musk apologize.[157] Two days later, Musk issued an apology for his remarks.[158][159] "I apologise to Mr Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader. The fault is mine and mine alone," [160] ; "My words were spoken in anger," Musk tweeted.[161] Unsworth is reportedly aware Musk has apologised but would not comment further about settlement or legal action.[162]

Tesla Chairman and founder Elon Musk apologized to cave diver Vern Unsworth, saying fault for the insult to the hero was “mine and mine alone,” Bloomberg News reports.
Tesla shares fell Monday after Musk attacked the volunteer who played a key role in organizing the rescue of a Thai youth soccer team. British diver Unsworth had dismissed the “kid-size submarine” Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. built to try to help as impractical and called it a “PR stunt” in an interview with CNN.
Musk made his comment on Twitter today.
Nonetheless, his actions against me do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologize to Mr. Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader. The fault is mine and mine alone.
