The bench and the technical area
A key part of playing football is about communication during a game. Whether that’s re-assurance to a player who’s a bit off form on the day, instructions to a player who’s up against a good opponent, changing some tactics mid half because of the opposition, or rollicking a player if he's not getting stuck in.

Equally importantly is the communication throughout the game between the manager, his coaching staff, his bench and the players on the pitch.

All obvious stuff.

Watching the game last Saturday, it’s clear that MP doesn’t have that communication and in my opinion it's because of the position of the bench to the technical area and the pitch.

Watch other games, any game, any league, and also recalling the days at Upton Park, the coaching staff and manager are in constant communication with the players on the pitch and each other because of the position of the bench to the pitch. At other grounds even when the manager is in the tech area, he can communicate between the players and his bench all the time.

At the London stadium he can’t. He’s either in the tech area cut off from his coaching staff, or sitting with his coaching staff and cut off from the players.

The gap in yards is far, far too much from the pitch. The fans are also too far from the pitch but we know all about that shortcoming and there’s little we can do about it.

BUT – the coaching staff & subs area, the bench, could be moved right up to the edge of the tech area so that the management team can communicate with the team throughout the match not just at half time. Surely this would be an advantage and it may be what we’re missing right now.

It's like when the team go out onto the pitch at the LS they become completely isolated from the rest of the 'team' they have been training with all week. All of a sudden they are just 11 players on a pitch with no back up to fall onto. And they appear that they don't know what to do when it doesn't go to plan.

Throw in the fact that this season it's 11 players & a manager who hardly know each other and where's the support coming from when it goes wrong? It just makes it worse.

Of course it would have to be applied to both home and away benches, but so what, it’s our team we’re focused on.

I was watching the Gazza semi final in Italy (’90 I think) where Bobby Robson was the manager and its struck me that his bench was right up alongside the pitch with a transparent roof on it and the fans were quite far back – much like our place.

Views? And how could you bring this to the attention of the club as an idea?

one thing the club really could have insisted on early doors was that the side tiers be remodelled so that they were straight. Could still have been multi use but most of the issue would have been sorted.

Difficult to carry mobiles, cb radio headphones like they have in busy restaurants would be better, 10 4 rubber duck, or dig down to lower pitch and bring stands closer, fill hole under with owners, manager and players.

Gav how can they be approved and then have a kaibosh?"

The planning authority (in the case the LLDC) can approve, its up to the stadiums managers (E20 LLP) to implement or not. It would of course require sinking either the edge of the pitch or some of the surface of the track into the ground. Perhaps they looked at it and decided the cost of replacing that bit of track every summer just wasnt worth it.

Re: The bench and the technical area
The other teams sit on benches in the same position and we haven't seen them struggle to get basic messages across. They also play on the same pitch, which is another excuse that I've seen, and don't seem to struggle to cover the ground or to utilise the width properly. It's nonsense. If anything we should be more prepared for the idiosyncrasies of the stadium by now than any visiting team. If it was so alien a concept to have the benches further back then we'd see visiting managers struggling with it and I haven't seen too much of that. It should work to our advantage if anything.

Against Wolves, Yarmolenko came on and for a while didn't seem to know where he was supposed to be playing. That's not an instruction you need to be shouting at him from distance, that's a basic fucking thing you can tell him whilst he's three feet away from you before he comes on.

Jesus, talk about cluctching at straws as to why we are so shit. If it looks like a turd and smells like a turd then in all cases that's because it's a turd. West Ham are shit because they can't or won't run.

It's got fuck all to do with how far away the technical area is. If that was the case why have we shipped 7 goals in 2 matches away from home as well, the technical areas there are right next to the pitch and it didn't make a scrap of fucking difference to the crap played now did it.

Surely anything that's crap for both sides at the London Stadium is to our advantage, as we should be able to get used to it.

Would they though ?

They would request the stadium owners did it, they would say no and it would die a death !

Gav - I didn't know that, maybe its not a bad idea then.

If thats the case and the track fucked it up, surely we could design something in 2018 that allows this to be done ffs.

Gavros 2:17 Thu Sep 6
Re: The bench and the technical area
the approved plans had sunken benches just by the pitch.

Perhaps interference with the track put the kaibosh on it, but it was definitely part of the plan.

Great shout

We have a distinct lack of leaders in this team

Saturday they were all looking around and getting frustrated about things not happening

Pellegrini is miles away from the play, I think you might have something here
