They Shall Not Grow Old
Anyone seen any of this? Directed by Peter Jackson, WW1 footage has been restored to near modern standards.

very strange to watch soldiers walk around in full colour, in HD, and at the right speed (computers were used to add extra frames)

They even got forensic lip readers so they could get voice actors to add dialogue.

type in They Shall Not Grow Old Jackson Kermode into youtube to see an interesting interview about it

I cried cos I'm that kinda bloke, in colour it brought them all to life somehow, when we look at Black and white recordings it seems quite easy to distance ourselves from those people almost as if they are alien beings the colour made them far more human, might sound silly but that is how I viewed it I also took into account that a lot of them were not coming back surely that can create a tear or two in some people, no ?.
My wife has one of those and she does not cry at anything Nurse is a cold witch too so not every woman cries when slightly emotional, I have a sister who cry's for nothing and another sister who will only cry for deaths so there you go.

Watched it on iplayer last night, absolutely mesmerising and seeing it in colour and at a proper speed made it even more horrific, if that's possible!!

Hope Tony Blair has nightmares every night for the rest of his life for sending our troops off to an illegal, unwinnable war!

"Amazing film. Went to see it at the cinema when it was on fire one night last month."

Look I know we all want to look a bit more hard given the lesson of 12 year olds pitching up for the Somme, but can we avoid some of these more outrageous claims?

When it went from Black and white to colour I actually cried.
War is a bastard of a thing. All those brave vibrant young men many running toward their deaths without a thought of what they were actually entering into, hell on earth.

I bet you cried in the Wizard of Oz as well??

You say all that Hairy... and from your couch whilst supping on your pink gin it probably comes across as that... but the vast majority of the Tommy's loved their time in the military... what fucked them up was going back into Civvy street and sneering cunts not employing them after the war...

There was a fascinating documentary afterwards as well called "The Final Hours" about the signing of the Armistice and how some of the concessions the Germans had to make in some peoples minds may have contributed to the Second World War. Well worth a watch.

Not sure about the crying when it went to colour though. I hope you took some time to sit down afterwards and rest your vagina.

Just watched it on iplayer, stunning piece of work, brings home how grim it was and just how tough that generation must've been.

Just saying it happened... children were always a part of military life in our army and others... think the Powder Monkey's were as young as 10 years old in the British navy...

Fucking incredible document from a completely different world and time. The switch to colour was absolute genius, and really brought the people to life.

I understand films on iPlayer are subject to complex licensing agreements etc, but They Shall Never Grow Old is currently only on iPlayer for another 4-5 days.

Every episode of Eastenders is on there for 4 WEEKS. Something is very very wrong there, and it should be on there indefinitely.

Apparently the production company are sending a DVD copy to every secondary school in the UK. Excellent move.
