James McClean - Stoke City
|
Stoke City's Republic of Ireland international James McClean will again not wear a Remembrance Day poppy on his shirt this year.
The 29-year-old did the same at his previous clubs - Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and West Bromwich Albion.
McClean is from Derry, where in 1972 British soldiers shot dead 13 civilian protestors during 'Bloody Sunday'.
The player said he knew many people would not agree with his decision, but asked for it to be respected.
In a statement on Tuesday, Championship club Stoke said their other players would have poppies on their shirts.
It added: "As a club we will be supporting the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal by wearing the poppy on our home shirt in the fixture against Middlesbrough on 3 November and on our away shirt in the fixture against Nottingham Forest on 10 November.
"The club is proud of its close connections with the armed forces and have also invited members of the armed forces to join our remembrance at the Middlesbrough fixture.
"However, we recognise that the poppy means different things to different individuals and communities and (like the Royal British Legion) do not believe that anybody should be forced or even pressured to wear the poppy against their free will.
"James has informed us that he will not be wearing a Remembrance Day poppy in our next two games. We respect his decision and his right to follow his own convictions."

Absolutely fucking spot on, Stain.
What does the poppy mean? Does it mean anything? Well it only does if the wearer has chosen to wear it (as I do, for the record).
The moment it becomes dictated by social pressure it ceases to mean anything at all. If someone chooses not to wear one then that is their right, as it is the right of others to criticise their decision if they wish. But this annual nonsense regarding McClean is pathetic.
Let's not get into a US situation whereby if you don't get an erection as soon as you spot a flag you are 'disrespecting the military'.

It should be a non story and would have been until the FA (or whichever silly fucker) made the clubs emblazon them on the shirts. Players' politics should be private unless they want it not to be. They shouldn't be put in this position. If I wear a poppy at work, its up to me. My employer shouldn't be making me.

The way professional football has apportioned the whole rememberance industry (for want of a better word) is bizarre, given that so few British players are involved. Of course they wouldn't have dared when the old soldiers were still alive, your average pampered footballer is complete antithesis of the men slaughtered in WW1

Imagine if the Germans had an equivalent of a poppy for their war dead. Bearing in mind it's NOT meant to be a political thing, right? IE nothing to do with the rights or wrongs of what the conflicts were about...
Would it be unreasonable for a Polish Jew to not wear a "German poppy"?

Surely it is a choice. I choose to wear one, I always have and I always will because it is important to me. He doesn't- so what!
You can gurantee that loads of people who are getting on their high horse about it do not wear one themsleves.

Just read matics reason for not wearing one and don’t understand - is he saying he’s some sort of pacifist and doesn’t like remembering dead soldiers? Doesn’t make sense
