Leigh-on-Sea named the happiest place to live in the UK
|
Leigh-On-Sea may be happy, but Soldo won't be
Whatever happened to Leigh Jim?
Essex's Leigh-on-Sea has topped the list of the happiest places to live in the UK.
Online estate agent Rightmove interviewed 24,000 people for its Happy at Home index, asking people to rate factors such as community spirit, safety and sense of belonging.
The average cost of a house in the estuary town, three miles from Southend-on-Sea, is £384,349

There's a picture of York Canoe club enjoying a pint in the King's Arms IN THEIR CANOES.
Won't happen again, as the pub now has flood defences installed.

The Fox Inn on the A59, and The Volunteer on a side street off the A59 (on the right heading out of town, visible from the A59) are also worthy of mention.
And, of course, all but one of the City's Sam Smith pubs give you cheap good beer. The exception is, sadly, the Brown Cow, as it used to be one of the best pubs in York in the late 80s.

Yes, the Phoenix is great. It was shit before it reopened, though. I avoided for years because of its past - keg John Smiths at best

York Tap and Brew York Taproom are different things.
The latter is the first outlet of a new brewery in York, York Brew. It's on Walmgate, I think, although it might be after Walmgate turns into Fossgate on the way into town. Of course, you'd probably be going in the opposite direction.

York Tap room is great - beer good, pies lovely plus it's directly on the train station platform back to London!
The Phoenix near The Barbican was a bit of a gem too

Many a good time had in there.
Good beer, well-looked after.
The Golden Ball's another favourite, and I'm not quite sure why I haven't been in The Ackhorne for ages.
Not forgetting the Brew York taproom. Their food isn't great, but their beer is excellent and extremely varied.

Sounds terrible...I know
The place is like one of those which used to exist in a middle of a terrace street and take up the same amount of space as a 2 up and 2 down ...don't think there are many if any left in London.

You know The Blue Bell pub then?
It's my dream of what the perfect pub should be...a very cosy front room and back room with a fireplace - bar in a small space between both with a serving hatch - which feels like somebody's house. It encourages conversation with others.
I could spend all day in an establishment like that! No dickheads allowed in there - it's understood.

I'd rather play bowls than walking football. I like bowls. I wouldn't like to be reminded I can't run.

You could play that there walking football.
No need to take up chess till you're 90.

Also met a few York-born West Ham supporters. We get everywhere.

The first West Ham supporter I met up here was at a chess club. He was a Londoner, too, but he was a York City coach.
Last time I met him, he'd just been made redundant. Must be about ten years ago. Not seen him since, but I made a choice between football and chess - I'll go back to chess when I'm too old to play football (= 75, at least, I hope).

Ah! That might be the reason then...
I visited recently and after a chat in a pub with one of locals - who was highly amused to actually meet a cockney who grew up 5 minutes from Lambeth Walk - he then asked if I was happy with the Olympic Stadium and revealed to me that the council there is building the football club a new community stadium with a swimming pool and library stuck to it as well. It will be run by someone else.
Good luck with that I replied...

eusebiovic: I've tried watching York, on more than one occasion.
Each time I got a headache, worse than any I got from watching us under Allardyce.
If York didn't win this time, York City's attendances must be up...
