One of my mates (spurs fan so was not interested in going) had people staying with him up from the south coast, one of them who fancied himself a bit persuaded us to take him with us.
Ten minutes after we got in (north bank) he was as white as a sheet and spent the next couple of hours absolutely shitting himself and didn't calm down til we got back to the spud's house in Stratford, he wasn't quite so mouthy after that

I don't remember Leroy punching anyone... I do seem to recall him grabbing Clarke by the throat ... shame as he was having a stormer

McAllister made several good saves after we went down to 10 men.
Clarke gave Leroy a sly kick in the ankle which led to retaliation. Hard to believe that was 31 years ago.
Now Leroy's son is a pundit and tactical genius on Sky doing the Championship and lower leagues. He's very good too.

I think it was Steve Clarke who got him sent off.

he didn't really "get" him sent off, Leroy chinned him

we weren't quite safe after this, had to go to I think Newcastle the next week and not lose by 8 goals or soemthing

I remember Lyall named Tom McAllister as sub which was unheard of back then

I went to this... remember it well!

I also went to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea draw 1-1 with Charlton. My uncle is a big Chelsea fan and my cousin (his nephew) was a Charlton fan. They went down and Charlton stayed up with us. Gordon Durie got an early penalty but ex-Spud Paul Miller equalized in the 2nd half. Garth Crooks got some homophobic abuse from The Shed all game long for some strange reason.

I remember us paying about £6 each

My uncle wasn't happy that day...we walked back to my parent's gaff behind the Imperial War Museum. I think my cousin and me overstepped the mark with our piss-taking.

I was there, I great day. I can still remember buzzing afterwards as I left the ground being so happy we had stayed up.

The Chicken Run was rocking that day.

People under 35 will never appreciate just how fucking great standing was at football.

Surely not as big as the following Leeds brought down in the 2nd division a few years later?

That was not a following more an Army.... they even all dressed the same and even had the same fucking haircuts... if they wanted to they could have had a right go that day...

Foe some reason we were sat in the West Upper for this one, must've had a good week at work and wanted to treat ourselves, was this Cottee's farewell too

Regardless Leroy was an underrated player, I used to love the guy and he scored some handy goals for us too

Chelsea had half or two thirds of the Southbank so we ended up in the northbank,

They also had a block in the West Side upper seats as we was sitting in the middle of them!! Bought 5 tickets off a tout at £25-00 a pop... anyway we had some fun... great day...

Thanks Ed.

Wasn't Phil Parkes injured the entire season?

Leave it to John Lyall to name an injured sub.

Unbelievable support that day.

30 years later and look at those West London cunts now, after being one of the main parties involved in turning football into the money playground it now is.

Probably the biggest away following I ever saw at Upton Park that day . Pointless journey for them though in every sense!

Phil Parkes

Re: West Ham 4 Chelsea 1 - 1988.
This result didn’t seal our survival, we could have still been relegated if we lost by 8-goals at Newcastle on the last day of the season.

So in the days of only 2 substitutes John Lyall named a substitute goal keeper. For the fucking life of me I can’t remember who it was, Tom McAlister was the actual goal keeper.

Chelsea fucked it up at home to Charlton on the last day.

Chelsea had half or two thirds of the Southbank so we ended up in the northbank, stood next to some roudy Irish bloke who stank of whiskey, northbank was rammed and the atmosphere when the goals went in was mental.

Leroy should really have had a hatrick by the time he got sent off.

Didn't Chelsea get relegated in a playoff (v wolves?) a few weeks later and there were riots at Stamford bridge?
