Steve McQueen
I work with apprentices so the average age is 17 - 23, they have not heard of Steve McQueen.
I mentioned him the other day and they had no idea, to cap it they said 'Oh yeh was he in CARS....................'

I can''t let it go

I'm not sure I could recognise many stars from my parents' era, so I would expect 17-23 yo to know stars from the 60s/70s. It's not like movie stars are that important.

The thread inspired me to start The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery again before going to sleep.

Not his greatest, but before he was really big and a interestingly made film (and free on Prime, if you care)

I agree, the only excuse I can give is that when I was young we only had three channels to pick from on TV so you would see "The Great Escape" or "Cool Hand Luke" or BBC's "The Hollywood Greats" where you learnt about Judy Garland, Fred Astaire or Jimmy Stewart. Having said that with the mass of options today with You Tube etc you would think there is more chance of stumbling across the likes of McQueen and Newman!

I was watching "Frank Sinatra - Made in America" last night and saw "Stan and Ollie" the night before and I was a fan of both when I was a kid.

So true. I often say " Oooh Betty " to people, and they look at me as if I'm mad.

I appreciate that my post made you care so much but if I am a liar then so you are.

I was mistaken and using records sales not albums. I apologize.

But the 100 million for The Who is also records sales not albums.

"Yet after 40 years and about 100 million records sold, the Who weren’t exactly red-carpet naturals."

The New York Times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists

Why did you use albums for Swift etc. and use records for the WHO.

As I said I give you my apology; I await yours.

You're not only a bore but also a bit of a liar. That list of artists who you claim all outsold The Who in album sales is a lie.
The Who have sold approx. 100 million albums whereas, at random
Taylor Swift sold 50 million
Bruno Mars sold 26 million
and Katy Perry a paltry 18 million

Those three don't even add up to the Who's total.
You want to get your facts straight before coming out with this kind of shit.

Don’t forget Papillon, although his French accent wasn’t great.

May be apocryphal, but I think I once read that (at least early in his career) it was stipulated that he was never required to speak more than 16 lines of dialogue.

A terrific actor, the essence of cool - Bullitt, Thomas Crown Affair, The Sand Pebbles, Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape - take your pick.

And as a labour of love "Le Mans" - shit story line, but obviously made by someone who had motor racing in their soul .

The Happy Mondays lyric came from a 1988 documentary about Mcqueen where a friend said he talked so hip, he couldn't understand what he was saying. Had a lot in common with a with Neal Cassidy

If we are to talk of modern music how many of you know about Sister Rosetta Tharpe ??? now that is the craziest thing for me.

Re: Steve McQueen
Steve McQueen was a wonderfully talented actor the tough silent type. Anyone who does not like his acting cannot be a man, he was that good he also looked the part which helps.

As for the younger generation not knowing him they do not give a shit to be honest, the sad truth is that because of their sticky phones they read a lot less and care a lot less about politics and know even less about history which is more important than knowing film actors .

I made a comment about Frank Spencer in front of a young doctor after knocking something over. She had no idea who I was talking about. She was about 30.

I was genuinely shocked.
