Worst results in our history
|
Many years ago but Barnsley, Everton and Sheffield Wednesday have all beaten us 7-0, Reading in the not so distant past 6-0, Blackburn in 1963 our worst home defeat when they beat us 8-2 at UP, the 5-0 defeats are a bit more regular, the last only a month or so ago! But which game was our worst result?
For me it would have been Forest Away when BFS threw the kids in and we lost 5-0 or losing 3-0 to Luton at home in the League Cup semi in the late 80,s or Barenley 5-2 at home a couple of years earlier who were a Div 2 side at the time, Wimbledon last season had me seething but now we have another contender…..Oxford United, has to be up there surely?

Cheers fella. That goes some way to enlightening me on why they were such prize pricks. So it was a rivalry based out of absolutely nothing just as it appeared to be. Wankers. Would like to see them drop down another division or two.

This based on discussions I had with a couple of Reading who were at that game (about a year later)
I think the Reading thing was that they knew their town was non-descript.
Other than the Rock Festival, it had a bus to Heathrow. And they knew there were much nicer towns along the RIver. So they were a bit like Basingstoke really, as a town.
But then with Madjeski's money they felt they were on the up. the place to be and all that. Whereas they saw West Ham as "ancient history" in terms of football and in terms of the decline of the East End (they hadn't got their heads around the yuppification of many of the West Ham heartlands).
So it was a "fuck you" to those with football heritage (and indeed community heritage over-and-above what you get from an essentially post-WW2 resettlement town)
Also note that those I spoke to didn't strike me as "football types", they'd basically jumped on the football bandwagon when Reading made it into the top flight. (And I suspect until that point referred to football as "soccer")
As a parallel: Think the arsehole who wins the lottery and starts lording it over everyone around them. And then wonders why no-one has pity when they spunk every last penny away.

The only time Mrs FEH came to a match.
That Wimbledon game: 3-0 up to 3-4 loss
It's one thing getting mullered from start to finish; quite another to be humiliated from a 3-0 lead

In the days before Internet, teletext... I remember Dad letting me stay up to watch News At Ten to get the League Cup result away to Mansfield. 3-0. Shocked.

The worst 2 I have actually witnessed away
3rd January 1978 FA Cup replay Vs QPR 6-1
20th March 1976 Div 1 vs Arsenal 6-1
Pathetic performances, particularly against Arsenal who were only one place above us 16th and 17th.
Following the Arsenal defeat so many angry West Ham's didnt bother with the Wolves home game in April 3rd, instead and estimated 4-6000 went back to Highbury for the Arsenal Spurs derby and ran riot across the North Bank with both sets of fans.
Can't imagine the confusion it must have caused the gooners, yids and old bill

Didn't we lose 4-0 and 5-0 to Tottenham in the same season?

There's probably been a few that have mentioned this, but Reading away, 6-0, January 2007. We've been spanked loads of times and its never easy to take, but they fucking hated us with a passion and I never understood why. It can't all have stemmed from nicking Pardew off them could it? They would give us so much stick every time we played them and it always seemed more personal than what other fans gave us. That day they were in heaven.

Also one that sticks with me is when we lost 4-1 to chelsea after going 1-0 up and then them having a man sent off about 15 minutes in.
To then go and get torn apart by 10 men was humiliating

Losing 2-3 at home to the Yids, in the Fa Cup, was a sickner. Especially after we'd knocked out Man Utd. and a top Sunderland side away to get there.
Another one of them 'not turning up' games when it mattered most!

The 6-0 to Oldham in the league cup semi was a stinker.
It felt like I'd been disembowelled after that one
