Becoming nocturnal
|
I’ve recently gone self employed and have found myself going to bed later and later as I can work whenever I want.
I’m finding that it’s preferable to the usual routine I live in the middle of a city and it’s much quieter at night, it’s silent so easy to get work done. The roads are quieter too and there’s no cunty people everywhere. It’s seeming like a win win for me but I am concerned that it may fuck up my brain or something.
Has anyone on here been nocturnal for a prolonged time? Anyone prefer it?

There are at least three flies in my house. The fuckers should be dead this time of year.
And my hobbies don't include running a home abattoir.
(Should that be aBATtoir on this thread)

Also, I had never seen so many WASPS in one place, as that owl sanctuary. Effing zillions of the buggers. Apparently powerfully attracted to the chunks of meat used to feed the owls and other birds of prey. You could have walked around with your strawberry mivvy exposed and remained quite unmolested.
They should advertise it as an owl and wasp sanctuary.

A limited mental flexibility is probsably an advantage in the wild.
And probably not in human-raised owls released into the wild.

Something I learned from visiting a CRACKING OWL SANCTUARY is that owls are not 'born' nocturnal or diurnal. They are socialised that way by their parents. Hence the owl keepers who had to adopt and rear chicks from nocturnal species had no difficulty getting a good night's sleep because their adopted chicks just fell in with their new parents' waking and sleeping patterns. That's what I was told, anyway.
I have a vast store of exciting anecdotes like this.

Just because you can't see owls in the day when they are not moving much, doesn't mean that prey species can't see the owls when they are moving enough to be a threat.

I saw a short eared owl while on holiday in Norfolk this year. I was pleased.

Night-time stealth overcomes slowness.
Daytime stealth doesn't work so well.
At least not if you're talking about flying predators.
Few day-time birds of prey fuck around with camouflage. Rapidity is their game.
The majority of owls are stealth, rather than rush hunters.

err. what has the silence of an owl's flight got to do with the time of day...
... or night?
Not saying you're wrong, but the way owls are so perfect in terms of daytime camouflage leads me to consider them daylight creatures in their own right.

Most owls are nocturnal, as their silent but slow flight is not much of an advantage at night.
Of course, oddball diurnal and crepuscular owls DO exist, but they are in a minority, like the burrowing owl

Not entirely sure most species of owl are especially nocturnal either.

Can you see mouse urine in the ultra-violet?
No end of uses for that skill.

Becoming nocturnal, sounds like the title of a book.
Are you starting to grow feathers like a tawny owl?
Do you prey on small mammals?
