King Midas? Not here, mate...
What more can we change?

We really are "King Midas in Reverse" - virtually every gold nugget we get turns to shit before our very eyes.

It's not a new phenomenon either. I've been following the club since 1963 - less than some, longer than others. There's nothing special about me (apart from my needs, naturally).

Way back then, as a 7 year old, politics was not my favourite subject, and in any case, I was only interested in watching (good) football. I was not even aware, 3 years later, we would seriously fuck off the great man himself; so much so that he wanted to move to Spurs. Spurs!!!

That was only avoided by strong outside influence, but, not to be thwarted, we off-loaded Martin Peters a short while later and got as a replacement...well, you all know the story.

Fast-forward to 1986 and again we had the makings of something special. And again, we fucked it up.

The academy produced Cole, Ferdinand & Johnson in short order, not to mention De Foe, and we contrived to put ourselves in such a position that they all went in a fire-sale. Another fuck-up.

Enter Dean Ashton...and exit again just as quickly. I suspect Di Canio only stayed because no other cunt would touch him.

Fast forward again to this century. Payet. A gem uncovered. A gem shat on with, apparently, broken promises - "We'll build a team around you!" (forgetting to mention that it would be Bosmans, freebies and pension-boosting has-beens).

And today. We have a team full of talent (ignore the price for the moment, the value is the important bit) and yet they, almost to a man, fail to deliver.

So what is it about West Ham United Football Club?

Since I attended my first game, we've changed owners several times, manager several times, the players several times over - likewise our kit & badge, and, for fuck's sake, we've even changed our home (and training ground).

Yet the cancer persists. Like Dark Matter or Dark Energy; invisible but clearly influencing the club & team. So, what is the cause?

I don't go for all this "gypsy's curse" bollocks that pops up when nothing else seems plausible, but there's something holding us back.

Any ideas?...

...anybody?

We know that fortune's always hiding, and still try to ride our luck.

E.g., it won't matter that Roberto's shit, because of course nothing's going to result in Fabianski not being available.

Has the nature / dynamic of the crowd changed, did people always fuck off 20 minutes, before the end, if not half-time, if we weren't doing well..?

Your manager cycle theory is interesting. I have never ever seen it like that.

My only point I would make with it is I don't think you can say under MP is there is a lack of quality within the squad and team. There is quality. I just don't think the quality is being utilised properly and in the right positions.

But, having said that, what you have highlighted is still of value. It seems the managers that play the crap football are brought in to repair and stabilise from the fall out of trying to play decent football.

So if your cycle is correct and they do end up sacking MP we should all be preparing to be under-whelmed with the next appointment.

I agree Mike.

Its defies logic?. The owners have to be the root cause without doubt ( and we have had dreadfully short sighted, self serving ones since our inception) but this current situation is definitely down to Pellegrini too. The cycle is reflected nowadays by the managers appointed and is a symptom of no long term plan as much as anything else. Knee jerk, invest only if you have to but above all else keep the TV money cash cow flowing.

Curbs = Crap football but more physically adept and organised
Gianfranco Zola = Try to play more attractively without quality of squad and team
Avram Grant - not sure what to say about this clown
Sam Allardyce = Crap football but more physically adept and organised
Slaven Bilić = Try to play more attractively without quality of squad and team
David Moyes = Crap football but more physically adept and organised
Manuel Pellegrini - Try to play more attractively without quality of squad and team

Pretty sure Leeds, Notts Forrest , Birmingham, QPR, Fulham and Sunderland might be asking the same questions.

We are not unique.

In a nutshell, we have always done everything on the cheap.

With respect, your post could come from 95% of football supporters of all different clubs, obviously changing the names etc etc.

Mike,

I think Charlton will disagree with you regarding Defoe, he came through them.

Re: King Midas? Not here, mate...
We're not the only club who has a history of doing exactly the same, the difference now is that the meltdowns on here are more aggressive down to the fact we fucking hate the owners and stadium we now play in.

Basically we fucking hate the owners!

I'll never have a full on meltdown as I've always taken it as a game and well basically we haven't ever won anything in my lifetime (or at least when I was following the club), but all of the shit and frustrating West Hamness was easier to tolerate and swallow before those couple of cunts stole our soul, ground and history purely for financial gain.

So called fans the berks, I'd rather be owned by that hate preaching cunt with the hook.

Re: King Midas? Not here, mate...
Mike, you have a kindred spirit here. No-one buys my 'a club has a personality' schtick and never has done but, like you, I've seen owners, players, managers - fuck even the ground now - change but the soul of the club, that defining 'why do they always seem to get it wrong' (or it goes wrong for them) never changes. The only constant I can see is the fans - I blame myself! The history of shooting itself in the foot has never changed regardless. The bad luck (YES! WHU are incredibly unlucky), the drama, the poor purchases, the way good players get pissed of at the club, everything just seems to go round and round constantly. You know, I even hoped the move to Stratford would lift the Gypsy's curse thing - that's how bad its got me seeing the cycle repeated every year - and I tip my hat to you trying to condense all the issues into just a few examples but, seriously, it is mind-boggling when you think of it.

Nothing to do with the messenger mate, as much as you want It to be - it’s just boring as fuck.

I see that the usual knuckle-dragging gobshites...sorry, self-identified old skool - are going for the messenger over the message.

Nothing constructive, as per usual. Best I keep posting until I get it right.
