David Martin's role at West Ham
Martin came in in the summer with Roberto seemingly as competition for Roberto as 2nd choice GK.

There is no denying that he did a good job displacing the hapless Roberto when he came in and kept that clean sheet on his debut against Chelsea and then held his own in the following few games.

My question is that when Roberto was clearly showing his incompetence, people were saying that Martin was being overlooked because he was never really expected to play and was mainly here for other reasons, perhaps for coaching support?

What exactly is his role if we are now looking for another back-up goalkeeper dropping him back to 3rd choice?

The other thing was he was a cheap British player, which we needed to ensure we had 8 in the squad.

Why would they ship him out? He's not the abysmal one they want rid of - he's performed way above and beyond expectations.

Realistically, he came in as third choice goalkeeper. Someone who is going to play the role of not ever expecting to play, not earn too much and mainly be support - so a generally lower-level keeper who is getting on (or a really promising youngster). Our one has a connection to the Club, which is ideal.

I'd imagine their thinking is to get rid of Roberto and replace him with someone like Randolph or Begovic (if the media is to be believed), dropping Martin back to his natural position of third choice.

Re: David Martin's role at West Ham
He’s a third choice keeper. He’s only expected to play in emergencies. The point is no one wants an emergency and emergencies are rare so third choice keeper don’t expect to play games.

It’s an insurance policy. It’s not as if martin would have been asking MP about when he’ll get his chance to play a first team game. He knew what he signed up for and why he is being paid.

I doubt Martin would see himself as good enough to be a second choice keeper anywhere in the premier league. It’s just that roberto is more shit than anyone could possible have imagined considerding he was a first choice keeper in la Liga at some point.

I can see Martin being shipped out to a Championship or league One side this month provided we sign a back up and somehow ship out Roberto, even in favour of paying up his contract (Roberto) and letting him go.
