This coronavirus in China - PL suspended until 1st June
anyone else worried? 9 dead so far.

CNY soon so the virus will spread very quickly if they cannot control it. It'll be in Europe by the end of CNY if not earlier.

is this the end of humanity?

So Boris is 'proud of his record' concerning the virus, proud of what exactly?

I'd much rather have "horse-face" running the show than one of the Gumbies.

It's true we do have some advantages here in our isolation.

But, it's also true that the government locked down our borders pretty quickly.

It's also true that we entered our 4 stage lock down process pretty quickly.

It's also true that most people actually followed the lockdown rules when they came into force..

It's also true that the rates of infection have steadily decreased because of those actions.

We had 4 weeks or so at Level 4 and have slowly moved back down through the levels.

We haven't had any new cases for 12 days now and only have 1 case currently and they're not even in hospital.

The messages coming form the Prime Minister and the Director-General of Health have been consistent. They've been reasonable. They've been caring too. People have listened to them and done the right thing.

And most importantly, they've been successful.

I'd rather have our way of doing it than yours.

Obviously NZ has advantages of location , size and population density but they acted early and decisively and even though it’s effectively gone there they are acting cautiously in unlocking step by step.

The UK (before it split into England vs the rest) had the Prime Minister mocking it and making a point of shaking hands with sufferers. Which almost killed him.
Then they’ve bumped along trying to catch up with 300 people dying most days , taking weeks to realise that care homes might be a danger and even longer to develop a tracking app (soon .... patience everyone , think of it as a Xmas gift) & still haven’t introduced quarantine.
Quarantine will start June 8 and be gone by July 20 as all the schools that haven’t been open go on holiday then and it’s embarrassing if no one can go away without taking another fortnights holiday to isolate when they come back. Whatever the pesky scientists say.

It’s a long road still to go and am sure the government will find more ways to turn a crisis into a catastrophe

New Zealand has dealt with the virus within 5 million people. Great and well done.
But it hasn’t let anyone into the country for months.Thats the real test.

---

They're not going to let anyone in. They're talking about a travel 'bubble' with Australia and maybe Taiwan. That bubble will probably expand as other countries get the virus under control.

The reproduction rate has risen to 1.95 in Berlin, authorities said – meaning each infected person in the German capital is passing the virus on to nearly two others. Berlin’s health minister Dilek Kolat said it showed a “trend reversal”

Interesting story about NHS England moving 25,000 old people out of hospital into care homes between March 19th and April
10th. The care homes hasn’t prepared for this or for the virus.

Encouragingly, Hospital deaths as of yesterday were only 19! (NHS England produce these figures daily and whilst they're subject to change for 5 days, the trend across the last ten days has been:

117 108 128 128 110 110 89 75 47 19

Seems to me that community based transmission is in heavy decline although the latest lockdown easing measures' impacts are obviously unknown at this stage.

Details about what those figures represent:

From Tuesday 28 April, NHS England and NHS Improvement started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no COVID-19 positive test result, but where COVID-19 is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death on part 1 or part 2 of the death certification process. This change has been introduced for deaths that occurred on 24th April and subsequently and is shown separately in the region data table only. When making comparisons over time these figures should not be included.

Interpretation of the figures should take into account the fact that totals by date of death are likely to be updated in future releases for more recent dates. For example, a positive result for COVID-19 may occur days after confirmation of death. Cases are only included in the data when the positive COVID-19 test result is received, or death certificate confirmed with COVID-19 mentioned. This results in a lag between a given date of death and exhaustive daily death figures for that day.

These figures will be updated at 2pm each day and include confirmed death cases reported at 5pm the previous day. Confirmation of COVID-19 diagnosis, death notification, death certificates and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure. This means that the totals reported at 5pm on each day may not include all deaths that occurred on that day or on recent prior days.

These figures do not include deaths outside hospital, such as those in care homes. This approach makes it possible to compile deaths data on a daily basis using up to date figures.
