Real serious and sustainable initiative to prepare for another pandemic would not involve spending billions, it would just be to encourage people to not be fat.
The NHS still promotes the food pyramid and eat-well plate.

A couple of years ago nobody could have imagined the shit that we’ve all had to swallow because of an utterly underprepared NHS.
We now know that viruses are a major threat that will never go away, so we should pay the big bucks to be prepared, just as we pay big bucks to have a military prepared for conflicts we also hope don’t happen.

The WHO’s pandemic strategy was updated as recently as Autumn 2019, so it wasn’t outdated when this all kicked off weeks later.
As for the bean counters saving the country money, that worked out well. How much have we been borrowed so far, I wonder?

I suspect the answer is that they left the NHS ill/un-prepared for such an event; absolute minimum of stocks like PPE - just enough to cope with a moderate 'flu season and an assumption that they could procure w hat was needed at the drop of a hat.
Some bean-counter somewhere put together a convincing enough PowerPoint presentation to "save the country money" and the existing "rule book" was out-dated. The government then acted on it.
He/She probably works at one of the Big 4 consultancies now.

There’s no way of dealing with a pandemic without upsetting someone, I just can’t understand why the, for one example among many, the UK government chose to ditch the well established strategy for mass virus outbreaks, which does not recommend quarantining the healthy, nor face masks for all, and instead followed the strategy laid out at Event 201, in October 2019, which was set up and attended by all the fat cats who are earning obscene amounts from how things have proceeded.
Why the fuck did we tear up the rule book and instead dance to the tune of a bunch of billionaires with such vested interests?

Lily alluded to it earlier, avoid accusations of discrimination by fucking up everyone.
I'm not saying I agree with it and I hope now the vaccine offers that buffer that an approach more at your end of the scale is taken up in the event of a variant etc.

So an employer has to pay 20% or whatever of the wages of someone who refuses to work, with the govt. paying the rest and then pay 100% of a replacement worker who they'd then need to pay off once fat worker returns?

Employers are required, by law, to provide a safe working environment.
