Daily Quiz anyone?
|
If you are stuck at home and bored like me. How about exercising the old grey cells?
I have for a number of years run quiz nights and couple of times a year. I was due to do one tomorrow which is now cancelled So I have a bank of questions sitting in my computer's hard drive. They are quite eclectic in their nature.
I am thinking I could put up a set of questions for which you write down your answers. After 30mins or so I will put up the answers. DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS. before I post the right answers.
You mark your own answers and post your score.
I will then record the scores and at the end of the "lockdown" we will see who is WHO's brainbox supreme. Obiviously no looking up the answers (you only cheat yourselves)
Word of warning these won't be easy questions as they have been devised for teams of six. Forming teams on here might be too problematic. So I'll try to pick out the easier questions.
Any interest?

and eleven before that and eight, eighteen and all the eighties before that. So quite a few before forty when you think about it.

Cough I guess I am but I am no philosopher. But education and learning are rooted in philosophy going back to the Ancient Greeks. I think we should question what is the purpose of education 🤔

Rios I assume Y? refers to why I think questions are more important than answers.
I was tempted to go into a bit of a self indulgent dialogue based on over thirty years teaching but I decided that my answer is not that important! But if I can be just a bit self indulgent I would say that my experience I had no real meaningful answers to impart. Rather it was my role to teach students to question.
I have however a limited response to your question. Which for ease and brevity I have cut and pasted from the web.
"Briefly put, questions are more important than answers because questions seek to understand–to clarify and frame and evaluate while answers, at their best, are temporary responses whose relative quality can decay over time, needing to be reformed and remade and reevaluated as the world itself changes"

I felt stupid in that one when my brain confidentiality told me well there surely isn't an X despite it featuring in about a quarter of them.
And wouldn't it have been more impressive to say 1-999?

True. But the marks scheme for it says 20% and this is aimed at kids. Love through way the most controversial queation (apart from hasty typing fuck ups) is the one I actually copied and pasted from an exam

I got 12 today thank you MD (long time since I needed maths formulae)
As for the debate about question 1 I think it nicely illustrates something I posted on Facebook just the other day. I responded to the question
"What is something that should be taught in school but isn't?"
My reply: "That questions are more important than answers"
In this case the question has potentially opened up a debate over the merit or demerit of margin vs mark up. Both can be used as a percentage measure of profit. But the original question does not specify what one the questioner was interested in. Without that both answers are right or wrong in equal measure.
Anyway I have a question: Why are mathematicians always losing x and then asking you to find it ? :)

The irony is the percent profit one is actually copied and pasted from an exam paper.

Re: Daily Quiz anyone?

The percent profit one is correct as it is profit of the original.
if you think that, don't ever run a business, or try and teach your pupils how to.
