A question for Killing Joke aficianodos
|
Why the fuck was I not made aware of their 2015 album 'Pylon'??
I bought 'Night Time' back in the day, but their work had 'flown under my radar' since then. Until last Saturday evening when YouTube cued up, quite randomly it seemed, 'I Am The Virus'.
Whatever you might think of the lyrics (which contain a stunning bit of SHEER PROPHECY), it is indisputable that this is one MONSTER tune.

A lot of artists got screwed by pledge. Jah Wobble was another.

He has a brother that works at CERN, where they're busy trying to create a Black Hole.
They have quite different world views.

Jaz mainly splits his time between Prague and a property he owns on an island off the coast of New Zealand, it was the Prague Symphony Orchestra he was composer in residence for and has indeed had a good few commissions as well, if you poke around you will find a pic of him in the middle east at a fancy do wearing a Killing Joke T shirt under his tuxedo. He has also done an orchestral reworking of Nirvana's hits, and The Doors. The St Petersburg was a doomed Pledge project that a lot of people lost money on but has been resurrected and released and it is his orchestral reworkings of a number of Killing Joke songs.

For anyone who used to like them and went off them as they went a bit commercial I'd suggest listening to their eponymous 'Killing Joke' from 2003 and working forward.
Total Invasion, Seeing Red, Asteroid, Loose Cannon and the particularly brilliant Dark Forces are all as good as anything they've ever done.

Yes he is and a classically trained pianist and has also studied composition at two music conservatoires.
He also moonlights as a classical composer (both Opera and Symphonies) and an arranger.
His last album was a suite of classical pieces bases loosely on KJ tunes played by the St Pertersberg Philharmonic (for whom he did a two year stint as composer in residence).

Didn't Jaz move to Auckland and set-up a retro-style recording studio?

i liked Killing Joke back in the day, but that is five and a half minutes of a dude screaming I am the virus. I fail to see much prescience in this lyric. ... sorry I actually like some of the other tunes Into the Unknown - has some decent lyrics going

I loved all their early stuff, up to and including the Revelations album in 82. Then Jaz decamped to Iceland, Youth left, and it was never the same again. I too lost interest from the mid-80s onwards.
I had a listen to that Pylon album Ron, but it didn't do it for me. It sounded over-produced and a bit...standard, compared to them in their prime.
At their best, their music was angular, tribal, jarring, but somehow euphoric. I'd never heard anything like it.

The last 3 albums have virtually been a prediction of what is currently happening from Absolute Dissent with The Great Cull, Fresh Fever From The Skies and European Super State through MMXXII with Pole Shift, Fema Camp and Corporate Elect to Pylon with New Cold War, War On Freedom, I Am The Virus and Plague. Jaz Coleman is either very astute or a rabid conspiracy truther, having met him on many occasions and partied backstage and aftershow as a mate owns the Prague recording studios they have used for the past decade I can confirm that he swings wildly between the 2. A brutal live experience still I heartily recommend catching them if you get another chance, but if Jaz's predictions are right all non sheeple will be locked up in the Excel Fema Camp by the end of the year :-)

Which was in turn nicked off the Damned (Under the floor again). No doubt Captain Sensible borrowed it from eslewhere himself.

Threir renaissance conincided with Youth coming into the fold first as producer/fill in bass player and then when the Big Paul and Youth came back for good following Paul Raven's death. They are absolutely brutal live still. Not bad for four old blokes and a keyboard sideman.
