What happened to all the snooker clubs?
Is it me or have most of the informal after hours places where you could also watch a must see boxing on the TV now largely disappeared?

I know there are a few trendy ones these days but the bars in them are expensive and full of middle class wankers trying to behave like they are geezers in the football factory

That is all, I drink my tea

The murder was Wandsworth. Croydon they had a gaff up until 2008 called the Loop Lounge , members only pool.

I think all venues are still a tenner to sign up for 24-7 365 access and social club prices for drinks etc.

Re: What happened to all the snooker clubs?
Worked in them when I was a kid. For London Snooker Ltd.
They were called New World Snooker years ago. They rebranded and refurbed in recent years to rival Rileys, and renamed their halls The Hurricane Rooms. More money from the Roulette machines and also 9 ball Pool became a fad. They all still have backroom Poker. They were in every other borough.
For any old ravers, their Peckham snooker Hall in 91/92 converted into the infamous legendary rave venue Lazerdrome and Innersense.
They also converted Kings Cross Cinema that done bog Northern Soul nights back in the day (packed with half of Chinatown gambling all hours), the flagship venue. Aswell as owning the Scala venue at Kings X.

If you are after an after hours drinking den safe, cheap and clean, you can always rely on those places being open 24/7 and serving drinks at social club prices not uber gentrified prices. The riff raff all got moved on.

They had Wandsworth as well around the corner of Club UK and also a hall in Croydon opposite KFC (years ago). The cleaner and her daughter were murdered years ago in that gaff

Off the top of my head Colindale, Kings x, Tooting, Stepney * maybe sold now, East Acton are still running.

Family business going back years , my best mate was the Director, Owner, died aged 44 with a brain tumour leaving 4 kids. Gutting.

I worked for the Port Of London Authority 1965-1980 and everywhere you went they had a social club which always had a few snooker tables the best one was at St Kathrines Dock House (Now a hotel) but their sports centre in the Drive Ilford was the nuts with several tables.

Also used to play above Wallis supermarket in Green Lane Becontree.

Cannavans - In the 80's I used to bunk off school to play a few frames in there...I was only around the corner...all students now...so a lot safer and still has a 4am licence

Re: What happened to all the snooker clubs?
I was talking to the bloke who's owned the club in Peckham for many years. Apparently used to be proper hard nuts. Now it is entirely students. I think it's safer for him to run it now but the students want more entertainment so it requires more effort in terms of thinking up stuff to bring them in and keep them in.

Still one in a village not far from here in Sussex. Remember in 1985 a mate and I decided to do a 24 hour snooker marathon for a local SEN schools charity. Us idiots didn't realise that when people did this sort of thing there were at least 8 of them! Snooker for 24 hours just us two was painful considering we were both shit at it! Made £150. The locals were skin flints! Got home shattered and watched a recording of Charlton v West Ham Cup match. Just as I settled down knackered my sister popped her head in to say "Don't worry they won 1-0!" Thought she was winding me up until Cottee's last minute winner!

It's on the upper floors above The Ilford Food Store on the junction of Green Lane and Greenside just down from Mayfield School in Pedley Road. Entrance in Greenside.
Ince used to play in the old snooker hall even after he joined Man United.

Re: What happened to all the snooker clubs?
I went to the New World Snooker club in Ilford for the first time in a few years just before the lockdown.

Its in a pretty bad state of repair but the tables were in a decent condition. No beer on tap (bottles only).

The one in Poplar is now a mosque - almost opposite All Saints church - if we're thinking of the same one.

Re: What happened to all the snooker clubs?
The snooker club off Green Lane where Ince went regularly before he did the dirty on West Ham has been turned into a hookah joint. Sign of the times unfortunately.
