Steve Bacon Hammers in focus
I came across this photographic history album when sorting through some old stuff during lockdown.
It covers the decades 70s-90s and was good to look through again, bringing back many a memory.
Nice fella Steve and great servant to the club also good to see from his twitter feed that he’s still around and in good form.

I do rate Pardew but not as much as he rates himself which is often his downfall.

Rubs people up the the wrong way and eventually loses the respect of players and staff who think he’s too much of an egotistical playboy.

I remember seeing him enjoying a good night out in Sinatra’s Puerto Banus just after he’d left West Ham.

Steve Bacon dislike of Alan Pardew is in the main because Alan Pardew stopped Steve Bacon walking around like he owned the place. Pardew was probably aware of this and ate his diner to annoy him even more.

Steve Bacon wasn’t the only member of staff from the old West Ham Cearns and Brown era who had their feathers ruffled by Alan Pardew. By the time the 2006-7 season started Pardew had few friends at the club, despite the Cup Final appearance and European qualification.

Alan Pardew was a bit of a cunt.

He nearly ran me over walking home from school one day. It was just outside the camera shop in Goodmayes Road. When I got home and switched the TV on going straight to Ceefax Page 302, I found out that Billy Bonds was appointed our new manager.

Cheers, I had a chat with that lady last time I went she was talking about the move and the antics of GSB.

Great place and fun to trawl through lots of stuff you wouldn’t find elsewhere.

I will visit again when I’m next over that way.

The Newham Bookshop is still there in bigger premises although temporarily closed because of Corollavirus.
The shop was always chaotic but the woman who runs it knew where all the West Ham books were.

I would always buy a copy of the Newham recorder every home game or visit to the area and normally read it on the tube home.

I also liked to visit the bookshop in Barking road lots of true crime and local history books as well as all your West Ham stuff none of it in any particular order.

Last went there just before the move from Upton Park but not sure if it’s still there now.

Was one of those stories where Pardew took someone else’s dinner on an away trip because he liked the look of it?
Can imagine Steve Bacons blood would run cold at the thought of someone eating HIS dinner

Re: Steve Bacon Hammers in focus
Yeh, he always appeared just before ko in front of us at away games as well. Cue the song JLAP. haha.
Hermit/oibb- The Advertiser was the same.
All blags, shootings, hookey gear etc..to start, then the court pages (to see if you spotted any mates/relatives), then few pages of adverts. (Mainly boozers. “A warm welcome awaits you” yeh, like fuck!)
Then all the LOCAL sports at the back (loads of it!).
The ELA covered mainly US, (but also the O’s and the unwashed fm over the river). A lot of SB’s photos included.
Yeh couldn’t wait till when it came out on the Friday. (then changed to thursday).

I’ve said before on here, you can go and view any copies of the local papers (going back donkeys), up the Local History Library at Bancroft rd, Mile End/Stepney Green.

Hermit spot on, I used to love that on a Thursday. Straight to the back pages for the montage of west ham photos from the last game.

Also the South Bank used sing there’s only one Stevie Bacon, when he took his photographic place behind the goal, he would wave then we would sing ‘you fat bastard’.. the best days!

The Newham Recorder back in the day was the highlight of the week in primary school.

Murder and robbings in the front half, West Ham in the pullout/back pages. Tons of his pictures.

It’s a bloody miracle he’s still alive though what with having eaten all the pies for a couple of decades.
