Re: Clyde Best
I saw one of his early appearances at home to Palace in 1969.
Lampard Senior was playing left back and hit a long right footed ball with a bit of a slice on it. Clyde got in behind the defenders and scored with a diving header about 2 foot off the ground past John Jackson's left.
Hurst mis-hit a second before half time and it stayed that way until, near the end, Palace scored and we hung on by a fingernails for a 2-1 win.
I remember my Dad saying to me "That's what it's like supporting West Ham".

Re: Clyde Best
Deserves far more recognition for what he set in motion, but a combination of him playing for us (not one of the media darlings) and not being a drama queen has played against him (that's entirely down to society, not him).

Cracking player, decent human being and not too bad as a role model, either.

Re: Clyde Best
Yeh, Clyde always rolled his sleeves up and give it a good go. (Mind you, think the shirt was too small and they rolled emselves up!).
Was good in the air, obviously, but also good at laying it off and then getting in the box.
A mate said he see him at Norwich away (early 70s) and the sheep shaggers slung a banana at him. He just picked it up, took a bite and chucked it back. Good man.

Re: Clyde Best
Clyde was a regular during my first three or four years of attending the Boleyn.

I was in the South Bank for one match, at about 1973, against Leeds when Bobby Ferguson went up for a ball and ended up falling over a player and ending up on his neck. In those days there were no sub goalies so Bestie went in goal.

Leeds were one of the top teams at the time and we were expecting a thrashing as a result of that, but Bestie had a brilliant match, even punching the ball away at one corner and also making some good saves.

The final score was 1-1.

Re: Clyde Best
Poor fucker after a tackle he was on all fours for a couple of seconds as he tried to get back on his feet. You can imagine what that looked like.

I recall that, was behind the goal in the NB made me jump, never saw it coming as others, mind you could hardly see the pitch over some of the big lumps as a kid back then. No idea who against?

Remember seeing Ade Coker coming on as sub a couple of times with Clyde together, unusual back then for most clubs.

Re: Clyde Best
Wasn't he one of the naughty boys who went out on the piss at Blackpool with Sir Bobby and Jimmy Greaves (surprise, surprise) before that cup game and got dropped but he doesn't actually drink? Might be wrong.

Re: Clyde Best
My earliest memory of my grandad taking me to Upton Park was seeing (I might have been four, five or six)Clyde Best score.
Don't know exactly why but probably because he was the only black player on the pitch and I couldnt see much else but it's etched up top somewhere I'll never forget.
Great bloke and a lifelong hammer.

Apparently he's the one responsible for bringing that wonderful goalkeeper Nathan Trott all the way from Bermuda.
Thanks Clyde.

I always watched from the chicken run and you can imagine the wit from that part of the ground. When he scored one of the best was ' there you go boys, that's called an in off the black'. Very funny at the time.

Re: Clyde Best
First saw him in a freindly at fulham. Never quite became the Eusebio we hoped for, but a good player nevertheless. A great pioneer and role model too. he wrote a book too which is an excellent read.
