Yeah, that mountain road down can be a bit hairy at night. It's the cyclists that go tearing down it that is impressive...one wobble and they will be in serious trouble.

Exile.

Re the expats.

I'll second that. When my old dear first went out there (1998) to live it was a quaint Spanish town with very few 'outsiders' I watched the steady influx of Brits over the following years and as the money came in,the town grew to the extent that by 2013,i stood in a queue in a bank and all i could hear was British voices, the exact opposite of what i first encountered years before. Have to say i preferred the old way but like you said, well done to anyone who got their nut down and made a shilling.

Personally I detest the whole ex-pat scene, wherever it is, and there's plenty of it in Spain - little enclaves of Brits with their own pubs, shops, estate agents, hairdressers etc. But respect to people who make an effort to learn the lingo and get to know the locals.

For me, much of the south is over-developed and over-commercialised. The whole of the north is gorgeous, from the Pyrenees right across to Galicia. Stunning scenery, great history and culture. The climate isn't so good but it's the true Spain, and not so many Brits, Germans etc. Great to visit but I have never had any desire to move out there.

Lived in Barcelona nearly 15 years and loved it. Also lived in Granada for 5 months.Gypsy flamenco in the caves of sacremonte. As others have said, Galicia is stunning, as are the islands. Anywhere in the Pyrenees. San Sebastian is gorgeous. Pretty much everywhere really, has something.

Forget boltholes in Spain you all voted to leave.

You won now get over it.

Maybe once freedom of movement comes into play with India you can all buy villas in Goa?

Stepney.

I was a yearly visitor to Mijas when my old dear lived out that way. Great drive up the mountain Road but first time i did it back in 2000 i came back down at 2am. No street lights, total darkness and sheer drops over the mountain. But yea, absolutely blinding place to visit,my kids n me have some cracking memories of the place.

Mijas is a cracking place. The in-laws have a place there and usually go with the wife and kids once a year.

Mrs Jones, very nice that way. I liked Bonaire area over that way near Alcudia. The countryside all over Mallorca is stunning, although I remember the traffic being bad in summer season. I think the West coast takes a lot of beating for scenery, Soller, Deia, Valdermossa, but lacks beaches. Es Trenc I found to be the best beach, stunning. I agree can get windy in winter and chilly, August can get uncomfortably hot if there long.

J. Riddle. Yes my house is in the countryside outside of Pollensa/Pollenca. Even though Mallorca is more expensive than the mainland you can still live very cheaply there. Surprisingly cold in the winter though.

Pollenca? I have relatives lived off the grid there for 33 years, Andratx 25 yrs now Sineu. Did a couple of years myself in Palma 90s. More Germans than Brits back then.

Bought a finca in Mallorca 11 years ago. Don't regret a second of it. Spend about 3 months a year there, hopefully more in a few years' time. Best time to be there is the winter when the 'here we go, here we go' mob have left. Although i'm well in the north of the island so somewhat sheltered from too much of that. Electric bills are scary though!

An old mate of mine has a place in denia which is a nice coastal town, quite Spanish still and not ruined by British pubs and cafes serving all day breakfast with your first pint of the day

A Coruna is my bolthole in Galicia (or Spain)

A football stadium on the beach surrounded by the narrow alleyways of the old city, full of bars, tapas and the best seafood one can eat...

Love Spain and their way of life. Not been to as many places as I would like to.

Nerja is good.
