Cars your relatives owned when you were a kid.
What was the first one you remember?

What was your favourite then?

What would be your favourite now?

Got a lift to school in a Morris Ital. Basically a dressed up Marina. Truly awful car and it rusted away almost straight away. Was always needing work on it.

Uncle had a Ford Mk1 Capri GXL and another a Vauxhall Viva. One of my dads friends drove a mint Triumph Stag and I loved the look of that car. Still do today.

I used to love going to breakers yard with my dad when I was a kid. Something from a bygone era. Remember one near Brentwood, 'Bones'? possibly.

OccupyGreenStreet 12:44 Fri Nov 6, I think it was your old man who sold me a used Hillman Hunter that conked out before I got to the end of the road

The old man was in the car trade for much of the 70s and early 80s so we had some unusual cars for a few years each. He swagged around in Citroen CXs for a while, the kind of low suspension beast that the French govt would use. And at one point he turned up with a Saab turbo (900?) which he used to kick down on the accelerator so that the turbo rushed in. Felt fast at the time.

My old man had a Humber Super Snipe and a Jaguar MK10. Beautiful cars. My grandad had a Vauxhall Victor and a Ford Zephyr which used to bounce on its springs like them cars Mexicans like.

First car the family had was a Reliant. No seats in the back so me and my two sisters sat in wooden chairs that banged into each other like fucking bumper cars every time Mum went round a corner on two wheels, which was every time Mum went round a corner. The chairs had armrests that we'd hang on to for dear life. Our knuckles were first points of contact for anything we hit and I, and my sisters, still bear the scars.

The next car, a Morris Traveller, was luxury in comparison.

Haha!
I had a friend who had one just like that - huge hole in the passenger footwell. It got quite damp if you were in the passenger seat in the rain.

130 is a bit crazy Vexed but he probably thought it was a bit of fun for his nephew.

My uncle as a kid had a nice XR3i but doubt it would have done 130 even if pushed off a cliff.

It's either that vexed or the forensic evidence you had on him........

I believe thats why my uncle got rid of his. Beautiful inside and out, fast, quiet, smooth. British. Unreliable.

In the late 80’s I worked for a bloke that had an XJS (pre HE model)

It broke down every 200 miles, usually something electric.

Uncle had a Jaguar XJS, beautiful car. Used to stick his foot down a bit, can remember him doing 130 taking me back home from somewhere. Exciting when you're a kid. When you're a bit older you think it was maybe a bit irresponsible.
