Big Match Revisited - ITV Hub
Watching some great West Ham nostalgia from 1974 on here .... games against Middlesbrough and Wolves from a packed Upton Park. Brian Moore commentating , Brooking running the midfield, Bonds as solid as a rock in the enforcer role and our top scorer , Robson / Jennings / Gould up front ...Lyall somehow had us playing attacking football with sweeping passes on pitches that a ten year old Sunday league team would deem as unfit to play on these days. No ethnic diversity at all in any of the teams from back then. Jack Charlton the Boro manager walking round the pitch before kick off picking up his players discarded tracksuit tops that they wore in the warm up...can’t see Pep or Jose doing that somehow. They must have switched off the pitch side microphones in those days as you can barely hear any crowd noise but what a place Upton Park was....Graham Paddon not a bad player either I’d forgotten about him.

Dead right. They'll have a bloke on £100,000 p.a. for that as it's such a specialised job.

The Paddon vid is good, albeit sad. Worth 20 mins of your time.

There was a Gillingham fanzine entitled Brian Moores head
looks uncannily like the London planetarium which was taken I believe from a song by Half man half biscuit.

Brian Moore was different class.

Enjoyed watching Hammers v Swindon yesterday ('75 FA Cup 1-1). I had forgotten that Clyde Best was still in the team that year.

Remember watching the Big match on a Sunday afternoon as a kid with the smell of the Sunday roast wafting in from the kitchen.

I always preffered him to the likes of Motson and Davies as a commentator too.

Can't imagine the players of today getting out of bed with some of the injuries the players of the 60s, 70s and 80s played with!!

Think it was Greg Campbell who said they trained on a bit if land at Chadwell Heath that was rarely used. He did a slide tackle and shredded his knee on an old tennis net post that was buried in the ground but was just under the surface. Ouch!!

On the OP. Really enjoy that. Tackles going in and people not doing Swan Lake when they did, just helping each other up.

I will say, as someone who was not born at the time, the inflection of the commentator really only reminds me of Monty Python's Philosophers Football. Tiny bit hard to not take as ironic.

Well done, ioc, that's the one. I couldn't find it - loads of Billy Graham videos, though.

Correct. A google search of the site plus Graham Paddon would probably find it.

Cheers Coffee , will take a look for that
Always thought Paddon was an underrated player and VERY disappointed with the minimal acknowledgement of him at London Stadium when he died.

There's an interesting video on youtube about Graham Paddon during and after his footballing life. Can't remember the name, but it was made by or done through the eyes of his daughter. It was quite a sad life apparently, after he retired from the game.

We had a mad run in the 74/75 season. Without looking it up i reckon it went something like this.

Leicester H 6-2
Birmingham H 3-0
Burnley A 3-5
Tranmere H 6-0 (lg cup replay).

September 74 was a great month on the old South Bank.

Re: Big Match Revisited - ITV Hub
It was watching games like these from 1974 on the Big Match from the other side of the world that made me a West Ham fan.
Games from Upton Park with Brooking & Bonds etc seemed much more exciting than the dreary dullness of an afternoon at the likes of Highbury, Stamford Bridge , WHL etc etc which were the other London teams mainly featured.
Happy days
