This cyber hack...
Being described as the worst-ever hack on the US government. Started in March. The hackers are known to have at least monitored data within a range of key US government departments including state, defence, homeland security, treasury and commerce. The Russian embassy in the US said it "does not conduct offensive operations in the cyber domain".

FMOB, to say the least.

For once I agree with you Vexed.
This was an elevated privelege exploit on Solarwinds Orion monitoring product that just happened to be used by the Agencies not a firewall instrusion. Use a similar thing where I work called New Relic but we don't give it all the permisions it could have as we just use it to find slow code/database queries.
I worked in the MoD in the 80s/90s and there was no network at all to start with. Data shared on floppies and all PCs had removable hard disk that we had to store in a safe overnight. Even when I left some buildings had LANs which had no connection to the outside world bar the odd SFTP server. We had one that took data on Army personnel numbers for forecasting and I had to call up a bloke in Bath to load tapes into mainframe and then give me a one time password to download the data to my PC.
Used to love that low tech world.

"Firewalls have to be tight 100% of the time, hackers only need to be right once"

Is there anything this cunt understands?

Re: This cyber hack...
Hacking is a two way street and as much as we get hacked we are attempting to hack others. Unlike the Americans some countries keep the breeches of their systems to themselves.

I think you really just have to hope you are not important enough for hackers to care about you.

Re: This cyber hack...
Let's be honest, having everything online was always destined to end badly. You are just hoping that the people building the walls are smarter than the people trying to break into them. And the problem is that they have to be smarter than them 100% of the time forever. That was never going to happen.

Re: This cyber hack...
They hacked FireEye as well. So now they know how one of the major security software systems works from the inside.

20 years ago I worked in IT for a Swiss bank in London. They had 2 networks. The external one connected to the internet and was used for external email etc. And an internal network which was isolated from the outside and on which they did their day to day banking activities. To move files between the networks, they would contact me to copy the files to floppy disk and move them, as theirs were disconnected.

I think that they will end up having to do something similar with their secret information. Just not with 1.44mb floppies.
