A little bit of realism...
|
I am certainly not defending GSB or Moyes here.
But it seems clear with the pandemic that Sullivan has been hit hard in the pocket.
As a club, we have no fans coming into the stadium or the club shops. Pellegrini and his signings were an absolute disaster and we have had to pay out left right and centre to move the Manager, his coaching staff and some of his players on at a loss.
Anderson cost us £35m and is not even worth half of that. We are still contributing to his wages and he isn't even here. Roberto, Ajeti, Wilshire and Haller had to be paid off and we still owe Haller's previous club transfer money.
We are still paying huge wages to players like Yarmolenko, Lanzini and Reid who are squad players.
So funds aren't freely available.
We then have a Manager who will not spend money for the sake of it. If he is not 100% certain on a player, then he won't take them. No matter if Sullivan / Mckay reckons they have the next best forward from France, Brazil or Turkey.
In Moyes' eyes, he has Antonio as his main man. He has Yarmolenko (who is a good player on his day) as back up. He now has Lingard who he feels can play as a false 9 should it be required. He also has Mipo as back up too.
At left back, he has Cresswell and feels that he can get by with him and Johnson as cover. He also has Masuaku recovering from injury.
In centre midfield, he has Soucek and Rice with Noble, Lingard and Fornals as cover. He also has the option of playing Diop in midfield.
Moyes knows that the players he wants aren't available in January and money isn't available at the levels he would like. But he feels he has a squad of players he can trust that can get him through this season in a respectable top half finish. Of course we would all love more than that. But from Moyes point of view, a top 10 finish is a massive step forward from near relegation last year. It also earns him a new contract.
So he is taking the long term view that he can get by with what he has and target the players he really wants in the summer.
Now I am not defending or agreeing with much of the above. I do feel we could have done better in January. I do feel it was a golden chance to show some ambition. I still think outside of Soucek and Rice we don't have players with all of the attributes needed to play centre midfield in the Premier League. I don't think that Johnson or Masuaku are good enough to be left back cover. So we really should have done better in January.
But the reality is that we have a Chairman that won't invest to the detriment of his wealth and we have what I call a Volvo type Manager. He is no Ford Pinto but neither is he a Ferrari.
He is steady like a Volvo. A safe bet. Steady she she goes.
Sullivan and Gold are sitting tight. Pleased that they have a Volvo tyoe Manager driving the club forward. Knowing that when that in 2 years time, they can sell the club without having to give any away to the Stadium Owners. They will also have players with huge sell on values (Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Benhrama etc) which again will ramp up the price when they come to sell the club.
We also have a Manager who is trying to rebuild his reputation and isn't going to rock the boat with the Owners No will he take risks in the transfer market that may prove to be his downfall. He can't risk another fuck up on his CV.
The only positive is that hopefully going forward, with Moyes in charge, we won't have the same calamity approach to transfers as we have had in the past.
So we can all moan and we should do. As fans we are entitled to make our points heard. But nothing will change in the short term.
And that I'm afraid is the reality of our club.

ChillTheKunt... You are exactly the type of so called fan I'm digging out! You are one miserable prick who only seems happy when we get beaten! I'm over the moon the way we are playing and sitting in 5th place, you on the other hand are the most negative wanker on here! Do us all a favour and fuck off while the rest of us enjoy the moment!

‘They will also have players with huge sell on values (Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Benhrama etc) which again will ramp up the price when they come to sell the club.‘
These players will be sold to clear the debt then they will sell. The more debt they clear the more money in their pocket.
They don’t seem to be offering Rice a new deal anytime soon. He’ll be the first one out of the above to go and only a fraction of what we get will go back on players.

In my eyes the employing of managers like allardyce and moyes are as disrespectful of our tradition as anything gsb have done. Watch the apologists steam in now.

If the GSB tenure had started 5 or so years back and they had not set expectations and told lies to move us to the LS, I might have had a little bit of sympathy. They used all that up by the move and on top of that their arrogance and ignorance and plain incompetence has us now in a worse financial position than when they arrived in terms of debt, making less revenue than Crystal Palace, no ground, 1 striker ( converted winger), no back up in central midfield of quality and no left back.
They are complete failures and should be placing a status of Moyes in their gardens for "saving their bacon" because without him arriving in time to get Soucek and Bowen and getting a tune out of Arfur, converting Antonio and generally getting us fit and organised, there is a very good chance we would have gone down and had to sell Rice and anyone half decent to become Sunderland.
This season he has more than saved them again by having us punching above our weight to some extent although as we all know an injury to Soucek or Rice in midfield and Antonio upfront would impact us hard.
The owners are the biggest barrier to any real success which might only be becoming an Everton where we regularly finish in the top 8. The success this season cannot be sustained with the investment levels we have been at since Pellegrini was binned. Moyes will not always get it right in the transfer market.
And the Sullivan's will continue to interfere in transfers and the football side. They're psychology needs the power/ego boost.

I think a lot of what you say is correct which begs me to ask the question. Whats the point? Boring football, only interested in survival, shit ground, no hope for at least 2 years.

I think a lot of people that post on this site are still in their own little cuckoo land of thinking that there is a Roman Abramovich or a Man City type owner that are queuing up to take us over.
That wasn’t the case in 2002 when Terrence Brown was open to offers nor was it in 2010 when G&S bought us. It won’t be the case now either.
Abramovich tried for Tottenham before he bought Chelsea. Had no interest in us.
Likewise the Man City owners had no interest in us before they purchased City.
Same with that proposed takeover of Newcastle last summer. Yes it didn’t go through but that would have been a game changer for them. Once again though they had more interest in Newcastle than they did for us.
We are not as attractive as many like to believe.
