West Ham defender Winston Reid hailed as ‘a giant’ after helping Brentford get promotion bid back on track

Brentford manager Thomas Frank hailed Winston Reid as “a giant” after the on-loan West Ham defender helped the Bees get their automatic promotion push back on track with a 3-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday.
Reid completed 90 minutes for the second time since joining Brentford in January and won 15 aerial battles as they ended a run of three straight defeats in the Championship.
The 32-year-old is battling back to full fitness following the serious knee injury three years ago that has wrecked his career.
Reid has not played for West Ham since he suffered a freak injury against Swansea in March 2018, when he was knocked unconscious and twisted his knee as he fell awkwardly.
After Brentford beat Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night, Frank said: “He showed why we got him on loan, why we needed an extra experienced guy in there when needed and he stepped up and did very well. He was a giant. He gave a lot of calmness to the team.”
Reid had not played for two months when he joined Brentford after his his loan spell at Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City ended in December.
Reid said: “It is just normal after having a bit of time off before Christmas. Coming into a new environment is always different but I know what was expected of myself, and that was just helping the team out and doing my job when I am called upon.”
Bretford are second in the Championship, seven points behind leaders Norwich.
Reid said: “When you lose three games in a row it is human nature to feel a little bit down. We wanted to bounce back and I thought we put in a good performance against a good team. We showed the right attitude from the beginning.”
