Michail Antonio set to switch allegiance from England to Jamaica in bid to play at 2022 World Cup Exclusive: Antonio will hope to fire Jamaica into the 2022 World Cup
Michail Antonio's chances of breaking into the England squad are tough CREDIT: Shutterstock Michail Antonio is set to switch his international allegiance from England after an approach to be part of Jamaica’s qualification campaign for the World Cup.
The West Ham United forward, 30, has been part of England squads under Gareth Southgate and Sam Allardyce but did not make his debut. The Jamaica Football Federation want Antonio to be included when they start CONCACAF qualifiers in September against Mexico and Costa Rica.
Jamaica previously tried to secure Antonio in 2016 before he chose to concentrate on England, but he will now have the chance to get them to Qatar next year under head coach Theodore Whitmore.
His form for West Ham this season has helped them get into the Champions League places, with six goals in 14 starts under David Moyes, who has used him as a striker. He has also secured a long-term contract at the club until 2023.
Southgate has brought Dominic Calvert-Lewin into his squad this season and is also assessing whether to recall Jamie Vardy for the European Championships in four months’ time, making a recall unlikely for Antonio.
Jamaica have moved to secure his international future and it is understood Antonio is set to accept their approach. They have friendlies next month during the international break but September’s qualifiers is when Antonio could start with them.
The “Reggae Boyz” reached the 1998 finals where they finished third in their group and had the likes of Robbie Earle, Marcus Gayle and Frank Sinclair in their squad and Whitmore scoring their goals in the win over Japan.
In the current squad, Ravel Morrison has switched to Jamaica after playing for England youth teams and Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid is among their players from the Premier League.
Antonio’s first England call-up came in Allardyce’s only squad of his reign. He was picked by Southgate for his first squad in charge, then withdrew through injury in the matches against Germany and Lithuania in March 2017

If he didn’t play for west ham not one of our fans would think he’s nearly good enough to play for England. Not one.

Haha, to get a better center forward than Antonio we’d have to spend 50m?. Bloke has been chucked up top cos the other bloke who granted cos decent wedge was shit and he has a done a sterling job so it isn’t a criticism of Antonio but let’s not go on like he is some top quality seasoned premier league forward.
I’d be near on certain that if we had signed 1 of Callum Wilson or Ollie Watkins then he’d have mainly been playing out wide this season.

Interesting listening to Kris AKABUSI on Antonio and his injury/twitch muscles.
He expects Antonio to get more and more injured in the coming few years - not exactly a revelation - and that best way to play him is in 15 min burst.
I would have done that for the last few seasons, based on skills and ability, but with injuries now likely to be more frequent, it’ll be unforgivable if we plan on next season with him as first choice striker.

“Cos if we sign a better CF which isn’t hard”
Really? Who?
I can’t think of many better who wouldn’t cost £50+ million.
In fact we had a £40+ million striker who was a far inferior player to Antonio who is now banging in the goals for Ajax.
Antonio is a far better CF than he is winger and suggesting putting him back out there is pure idiocy.

In the last 3 seasons plus this one we have played 142 Premier league matches Antonio has started 74 You cant see that changing as he ages. We need 3 out and out strikers

Cos if we sign a better CF which isn’t hard then where does he play? If we go into next season with him as our first choice centre forward then Sullivan and Moyes would have failed in the window. He’s had a decent purple patch but relying on Antonio as your seasoned centre forward isn’t viable in the long term.

Because Antonio can't be relied on to play all the time and if he's our first choice we're weaker when he isn't playing..

“Spot on, sell Yarmolenko let Antonio play wide and be 3rd choice CF if needed.”
Why would you want Antonio to play anywhere other than CF?

I'm guessing you'd rather bring on Antonio? But what if he's done his hamstring on the first day of training? He can't be replied upon, sadly.

Regardless of goals, or not, Antonio is never an England player, let's get it right. For starters, at that level you are required to pass the ball to a player on the same side as you.

So if we're 5th and Villa are 9th he's outscored him in a poorer team, what's your point?

And we're 5th and Villa are 9th
Antonio is one of the top scorers in the prem last 12 months
I thought Southgate was picking on FORM
I know who id rather come on as a sub to protect a lead up front or act as a battering ram if they are chasing a game

The same Ollie Watkins that has scored more goals than Antonio, is 5 years younger and doesn’t have hamstrings made of plasticine

But hasn't he scored twice as many as Antonio and Young and doesn't have fragile hamstrings... I'd pick him instead
