The new Champions & Europa League formats
So now the ESL's been put to bed, what are people's thoughts on the proposed new UEFA formats for 2024 onwards?

For those who don't know, briefly the plan for the CL is:

36 teams in a single league. Each plays 10 games against 10 different clubs (5 home, 5 away). Top 8 go into next round. 9th-24th go into playoff for next round. Last 16 and following rounds are knockout ties as normal.

Europa League is supposed to follow a similar format, but with 8 games in the league stage.

Pros:
- The shit teams in the CL don't get to join in the Europa midway through.
- Slightly more likely to have interesting games at an early stage

Cons:
- Even more money for the bigger clubs as guaranteed more matches even when they're shit
- Presumably the 10 games are seeded but there'd still be massive randomness in games with home advantage
- Too easy for the usual suspects to always get to the last 16 stage every year

I think that is the only scenario where 4th wouldnt be a champs league spot

Thank you. Looks like we might be in Europe in some shape or form then.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
It gets even more confusing if Chelsea win the Champions League and Arsenal win the Europa and both finish outside the top 4.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
Not quite. If Man City win the League Cup, it wouldn't open up another spot in the Europa League. It's a Conference League entry competition only now.

If Tottenham win the League Cup and finish 8th or lower, they will go in the Europa Conference League. If Manchester City win the League Cup final, the Europa Conference League place will go to the 7th-place finisher.

6th place will definitely be Europa League unless Chelsea or Leicester win the FA cup and also drop down to 7th or below.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
So is this right.

Top 4 go into CL

5 & 6 go into Europa League

If Man City win the League Cup, another spot opens up in the Europa League becasue they will be in the Champions League and if Tottenham win, they go into the UEFA Conference League

Another spot has already been opened in the Europa League as Chelsea & Leciester are in the final and will probably both be in the Champions League.

Sorry, but I am really confused.

They really are the biggest bunch of cunts. If only fans had a real voice and could oppose and change these bent rules. How do we do that? Any ideas?

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
ludo,

Yes, if we finished 5th and Arsenal 6th, with both places qualifying for the Europa League, then they'd go in the Champions League instead.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
'Big teams' coefficients will only get better 'cos they will still be 'invited' to join the CL even if they don't qualify by league position.

As I understand it, once this comes in we could finish above (say) Arsenal and they would qualify due to their coefficient ahead of us.... SHAMBLES

Seems a scandal to me.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
Anything not earned on pure merit from the last season, and the last season alone, is total bollocks and should never be a factor.

If Liverpool finish out of the qualifying places, then fuck them. They shouldn't sneak in because they were good the year before.

This format is worse and more big club friendly than the existing one, which wasn't great anyway. Just goes to show what a bunch of cunts they are that they were being given even more concessions here but still didn't think it was enough for them.

Do any of these permutations actually make the matches themselves any more exciting?

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
yes, if your record is say, 4 - 1 , then you play another 4 -1 team in round six

could get a bit 'tactical' like you say !

So if it's like a Swiss chess tournament but in a sport where draws and goal difference are a thing, then presumably 1st play 2nd in the table, 3rd vs 4th, and so on, unless they've played each other before.

So, likelihood is that the big clubs play the other big clubs more often in the group stage, but probably without actually knocking each other out of the competition. Sounds ideal for these ESL clubs.

The last few games would be hilarious. Probably have players scoring deliberate own goals to avoid certain teams in the next match.

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
Russ its essentially a ranking of teams, better you do in europe more points you get.....think they take points for last 3 seasons or something to determine your ranking. get points for winning league titles etc.......essentially its a way for a top club to maintain being in europe even if they have 1 shit season

So Man Utd can finish bottom of the league but qualify for the champions league

hope these proposals get hounded out of existence like the ESL

Re: The new Champions & Europa League formats
Both European competitions have been truly awful for me since they both became leagues.

Not bitter due to us not being in them, as I'd barely be interested if we were.

Used to be great comps back in the day, now purely designed to have the same boring cunts in and around the quarters every year, proper snoozefest.
