The road tolls from Lisbon to the Algarve was about €40. The free roads are about 2 hours longer.

I do it once or twice a year from Catalonia to Portugal. Motorways are good. Loads of cool places to stop on the way. Madrid, Cuenta, Granada, Córdoba, Sevilla, you could also consider, San Sebastian, Santander.

Late 90s drove from Palma ferry to Barca then drove overnight as traffic less from Barca to Bilbao then ferry to Portsmouth. Roads in Spain are better than UK, all those EU grants, I expect Portugal same. If going to Algarve maybe better to drive down to Seville then over the border. I also flew into Lisbon and drove to Algarve the roads are good from there. I would just make sure of decent breakdown cover in case.

In the old days pre covid I drove to Malaga in a transit from Kent with a couple of mates (Don't ask)
Drove through France into the mountains and into Spain, did a left at Bilbao and through Madrid, all easy so going straight onto Portugal wouldn't be to hard.
Also driven to Andorra and back in a transit (Don't ask)

Defjam, can you elaborate on both trips please?

Go to Cape St Vincent or Cabo de São Vicente, as the locals call it.

It's the most South-Westly point of Europe, it's best at sunset

Portsmouth -Santander. Prices are hot. Drive down to Galicia Santiago, Vigo, then leisurely through Portugal. Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon.

The 24hr ferry ain’t cheap but you miss all of France and their toll roads. Fuel is more expensive there than hear as well. Take everything into account and the difference is prob less than £100.

Unless you do your bollocks at the onboard casino.

Re: Road trip to Portugal
In 1964 my Dad took the family on holiday in a Morris 1000 (actually 1100cc) towing a fold-down caravan, to the South of Portugal and back - about 4000 miles. No motorways in those days and many of the Iberian roads were not even sealed. Of little help to you I know, but don't think of any modern car journey as daunting.

Re: Road trip to Portugal
Right now if you want to enter France from the UK you must have proof of a negative result for covid infection within 48 hours of your intended entry. In addition you will need to quarantine for seven days once in France.

So take Joe Royal’s advice and get thePortsmouth/Santander ferry.

If you enter France you have to quarantine for 10 days.

Re: Road trip to Portugal
Get the overnight boat to San Sebastián and avoid France.

Download an app called Truckfly to stop at truck stops and not motorway services.

Do not speed through the Basque part of north Spain, the fines are eye wateringly large
