Drones
Any of you good people into drone photography?

And if so any advice to offer someone that is considering getting one?

"What's an entry level drone to start off with?"

Get a DJI Mini 2, FIMI MINI Pro or a Hubsan Zino Mini Pro. My choice would be the DJI.

Anything else would be overkill if you're starting off as a beginner, and could also get a little more expensive for you when the new rules and regs come in at the start of 2022.

I think that if you're willing to wait for something from China wish.com do some decent knock offs for about £50. They'll have shit cameras though.

Loads of decent information on YouTube.

My DJI Marvic Air 2 cost me about £750 from eBay with extra batteries and propeller blades. I love it.

Re: Drones
G,

I'm no expert and I have only owned one drone but the Air 2 is pretty amazing and a brilliant drone to have while you're learning.

I know like me you are a photographer and it's not quite there with broadcast quality shooting but it's a brilliant little thing that will shock you with what you want out of a device. Rock solid stability in everything but really high winds and actually not bad in low light in town.

But ... Once you start on your adventure be prepared for saving up for the Mavic 3 pro. They are fucking addictive! You'll start thinking about using them indoors in clubs shooting bands I promise.

Let me know how you get on mate.

A used Air 2 is not that much more expensive than a new Mini 2 which is now giving me a dilemma re purchasing.

Re: Drones
I was in exactly the same boat as you G.

I wanted to get the Mavic pro but as I had never flown one I got the Air 2 instead in case I smashed it (which of course I did).

It's a really great drone and you can put it in into tripod mode which makes it go slower and is more easy to fly. I absolutely love it, in spite of me being a bit of a cunt, putting it into sports mode and smashing it into my local pub at about 30 mph!

My only problem with it is that it's not quite broadcast quality. It's only got a half inch sensor and I do a lot of filming in the dark. Everything's a bit over sharpened, much like the footage or photography you'd get from a really good mobile phone.

Once you've got one though it changes everything. You can fly it indoors and it looks like you've got a camera on a really sturdy tripod and you can get shots that you just couldn't get from a slider or a crane. It's brilliant but if only the video was a bit better.

I'm waiting for for the DJI Pro three which comes out at the end of October and has a one inch Hasselblad sensor so I can fly it at night and look at ladies undressi...oh fuck I've ruined it...

Re: Drones
Everyone and their dog seems to be into this shit these days. Isn't the whole point meant to be that they're so easy to fly that it requires next to no skill? As long as you miss buildings you're fucking golden. Even then you're probably ok. They do look a laugh though.

This has the whiff of 'perv alert' about it

And don't fly the bastards over the lakes I've fished, we try and shoot them down with boilies , bloody great robot wasps

Re: Drones
I'm of the "video game" age so I found it pretty easy.

The difficult thing is when you have it flying towards you so effectively everything is back to front if you're flying with your eye on it. Obviously all that can be ignored if you just look at your phone screen to fly it.

I'd also recommend getting a phone with an OLED screen as normal screens can be quite tricky to view in the daylight.

Re: Drones
I can do, no rush really. Just, be good to get started as you know.

How do you find the learning curve? Both flying and pic/film making? I've never ever had any remote cars or planes in my life so flying is completely new to me.

Re: Drones
Can you wait a few weeks? Black Friday normally kicks up some deals.

Also, have a look at Amazon warehouse for "as new" deals on them. I picked up a mini last year on a warehouse sale for £180, and it had been flown for 40mins. No marks on it.
