Surely he was offside the instant the pass was hit to the French player…

What happened after that,
…irrelevant…

OFFSIDE..,!!!

Re: France v Spain
If they just blew the whistle when the pass was made this wouldn’t be an issue. Or better still when a player strays into an offside position (I think they used to be the rule?) then just blow the whistle.

Feels like as a defender your forced to keep playing as you don’t know whether the ref will judge it as off side. Then by playing on you end up making something that was clearly offside, onside! That’s kind of stupid really.

I understand the rule but just saying stretching to block a pass because you know an attacker is behind you shouldnt be regarded as deliberately playing the ball.
If you control the ball and then play it back to your keeper and MBappe intercepts then fine that THAT is onside but to me this is more like a deflection than a deliberate playing of the ball.

The positive is that a trophy being decided by this (correct) interpretation makes it more likely they will change it.

Re: France v Spain
Is obviously a shit rule
Should only apply if the defender plays a ball under his control.
If you are stretching for the ball and its effectively a deflection the offside player should be PINGED.

P Fornals had 10 mins incl injury time and did well from the left.
Had one chance where he might have been able to hit it earlier but should have been on earlier.
Spain battering them at the end and could have gone either way.

Cracking goal by Benzema but sure surely MBappe was offside for his winner.
