What is the point of these matches?
Waste of fucking time, players risk getting injured in meaningless games.

Time for UEFA to let the smaller teams have their own tournament and the winners progress to qualification stages.

The scoring records of Hurst and Charlton are being consigned to the record books because Kane plays against San Marino and Andorra etc etc

Re: What is the point of these matches?
apologies to dm

Having checked their records the BALTS are even shittier than I'd thought. In some ways they are worse than shit, as they have populations comparable to Whales and Norn Erlund, neither of which are properly shit.

Re: What is the point of these matches?
The issue seems to be the paper definition of a "Nation" when deciding who plays whom.

The "On paper" part being where the root cause of this all arises.

There should be a modified defining factor as to the qualification to participate in these competitions, such as:

"The number of players from any given nation currently in the squad of a club participating in international CLUB competitions."

It could be augmented once done by the number of players from any given nation playing in a league of a foreign nation.

The "on paper" definition seems to suggest that the authorities believe that the administration is more important than the product.

Gibraltar and Faroe Islands aren't even nations.

A bit harsh on the BALTS there, dm

I suppose the Scots and Welsh will want to avoid Czech, who are probably the strongest side in pot 2. I can see Italy and Portugal making it, which only leaves one more space. Tough.

Good to see that both Scotland and Wales have qualified for play off positions.

Scotland did very well to inflict a first and only defeat on Denmark too.

Re: What is the point of these matches?
Can’t work out why San Marino & Andorra were in our group. FIFA rankings are bizarre. Can understand why one would be in our group going by there current rules. Those lower ranked nations should play qualifiers like the champions league/Europa league. These soppy games don’t do either teams any favours.

Re: What is the point of these matches?
I've been saying for years that UEFA should contact the very small nations, eg Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, etc. And invite them to instead of taking part in the European Championship qualifying groups, they could have their own small nations and territories championship.

I'm all for Yorkshire declaring independence from England.

York declaring independence from Yorkshire.

Fulford declaring independence from York.

My street declaring independence from Fulford.

Me getting my first international cap against the next street up.

It's because we have the greedy corrupt idiots at FIFA running the game. More = more to the these clowns.

Winter World cup in Qatar via corruption and stealth.
Now they want a World cup every two years.

CLUELESS CUNTS!

You're all over the fucking gaff.

I'm talking about teams like San Marino, Andorra, Gibraltar, it's absolutely pointless them entering as they just get walloped every fucking week.

Even you could do a better job than some of their players.

Re: What is the point of these matches?
Right so worked out it... England's Top Goalscorers (only top 20 ranked teams and ALL pens taken off)

Rooney - 16
Owen - 12
Kane - 15
Lineker - 17
Greaves - 14
Charlton - 18
Crouch - 7

Is that better Bolty?? Get on to FIFA and get it changed... cheers

It's not meaningless, the point is exactly the same.

IF you have zero dignity, you're happy to get smashed every single time you enter the field.

Pathetic.

Meaningless comparison. They've been drawn against us 4 times in competition in 30 years. it's not like it's a regular occurrence. I'd agree with you if we were playing them every time, but we're not. Playing England at Wembley is still basically once in a lifetime for those players.

Their pride and dignity is essentially being able to walk out at these massive stadiums and share a pitch with proper world class players when they have their games against the top sides. Of course it never becomes tedious and tiresome for them.

And apart from beating Lichtenstein, essentially their proudest moment is scoring one goal against England, despite taking a heavy loss in the game. Might look pathetic from this side of the fence, but not from their side. It's all relative.
