Director claims West Ham wanted to keep a player he’s just signed for free

Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry has admitted that the Championship outfit are yet to pay West Ham United a penny for one-time Premier League 2 star Kai Corbett, speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph.

When explaining his decision to swap the London Stadium for London Road recently, 19-year-old Corbett appeared to be in no doubt that Peterborough represents ‘the best step in my career’.

And while Darren Ferguson’s side are mired in the Championship relegation zone, four points adrift of safety and winless in their last six league games, we can understand where he is coming from.

Britt Assombalonga, Ivan Toney, Jack Marriott and Dwight Gayle are just four players who made a name for themselves in Peterborough colours, rewarded with a substantial step up the footballing pyramid after scoring goals for fun in Cambridgeshire.

There is no reason to believe that Corbett, one of the most exciting youngsters in West Ham’s feted academy until very recently, cannot follow in Toney’s footsteps under a manager who can boast a proven track record when it comes to giving youngsters a chance.

“West Ham were entitled to charge £400 to 500,000 for Corbett because he’d been at the club for so long and they’d offered him a new contract,” explains Fry, who is understood to enjoy a positive relationship with Davids Gold and Sullivan at the London Stadium.

“But I did a deal through my relationship with their owners which means no money has changed hands yet.”

Corbett, who had trials at Wolves and Southampton before putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with Peterborough, made his Championship debut during Saturday’s goalless draw with fellow strugglers Barnsley.

The teenager never made a first-team appearance for West Ham.

But, given that David Moyes has handed senior debuts to the likes of Sonny Perkins and Dan Chesters recently, few would have been surprised to see Corbett get his chance in claret-and-blue eventually.

Heavy hint West Ham have ‘submitted an offer’ – January transfer, interest is ‘concrete’

For the past few days, West Ham, Leeds United and Barcelona have been mentioned as Arthur Cabral’s suitors.

Over the weekend, Goal Brasil reported the Hammers held a virtual meeting with the FC Basel star’s representatives.

The striker has grabbed attention from David Moyes’ side and Barca, after shining for the Swiss club, by scoring 25 goals and registering eight assists in 26 matches this season.

Reports in Spain suggest the 23-year-old is one of the options considered by the Catalan club to bolster their attack in January. There were even claims stating that Barca are negotiating with his agent.

According to 4-4-2.ch, Basel have not received a ‘written offer’ from the La Liga side for the Brazilian.

However, an English club is making ‘concrete efforts’ to sign the goalscoring star, and have ‘submitted an offer’ of around €20m. The reports says the club is thought to be West Ham.

It’s claimed Cabral’s ‘departure from Basel in approaching’. The Swiss side are ‘preparing’ for his exit, which is likely to take place in January.

The end the report by stating: ‘Basel will not refuse to approve Cabral’s departure in January simply on the basis of economic reason.’

Cabral looks like Haller but with a personality.
I can see him being a hero quickly.
But who to drop?

Thanks Alan

There is a younger Canadian who just tranfer to Basel last window so I see Cabral a fair bit.

Of course, many strikers who score for fun in leagues like that have not made it in the Premier League but he has decent physicality to go with a whole lot of skill.

Reminds me of the good bits of Haller, lots of techinque and at least access to a bigger body. Hopefully he tries a bit more if he comes here.

For prices talked about, certainly worth a punt.
