A month in west Africa .
Toying with the idea of buggering off for a month or so. Mombasa to Nairobi on the idiot train looks a laugh, any other stuff, Victoria falls for instance ?

Gorilla tracking is out as the permit alone is $1000 plus I’m very lazy.

Cousin got married to a South African bird back in 2003 so all the family went out there for it. Stayed at a Casino Hotel near Jo’burg airport. when we arrived (bizarrely Jerry Springer was doing one of his shows there) Afterwards everybody went on a coach tour around the country. Amazing place. Watched England v Oz in the cricket World Cup in port Elizabeth. Did cage diving with Great Whites in Gaansbai. Went to a country called Lesotho which is completely surrounded by South Africa. It was nice apart from driving past people on the side of the rd and one minute some are smiling and waving then another lot would be doing the slit your throat gesture. We asked the driver why they had the hump and he said it’s because they think your South African. A few of us chucked our England shirts on after that.

Fuck of a long way from Nairobi to Vic falls.

Malawi Highlands were impressive, senrengeti and Masai Mara, Lake Malawi also pretty nice, used to be some good diving there, but bugs in the water were an issue.

After failing to get a part in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves in the early 90s I had a bit of a hissy fit and fucked off to Gambia to get some winter sun.

It changed my whole outlook on life as I met locals steeped in poverty yet always found a reason to smile and be generous with the little they had.

Been back many times and took my sons when they were 9 and 10. We visited a local school, which was a few huts with a few rickety tables and chairs. They too learned to be grateful for what they have.

Funnily enough I mentioned to the misses this morning that I wanted our next trip abroad to be to Western Sahara. She humoured me but I could tell her heart wasn’t in it.

For some good tips on Africa it’s worth looking up Lord Miles Routledge on the World Wide Web. He’s had some adventures there recently and has kept a daily record of it.

Faaaaar west Africa is best right now. Far enough west to call it Mexico, where they have just dropped all Covid restrictions, so you can get in, around and back out with zero stress and general bollocks.

Can find most nations in barking spoons. It’s like being a tourist without the expense.

My tip:

East Africa or West Africa, make sure your plane's destination and your hotel are on the same side.

It's a bit of a trek from one side to the other.
