Star injured for ‘at least’ 2-3 months a week after West Ham have €30m+ deadline day bid rejected

In dire need of a new striker, West Ham United fired a few last minute bids on transfer deadline day to try and give David Moyes more firepower.

The Hammers tried their luck with Darwin Nuñez at Benfica, to no avail, and then went after Duván Zapata, currently at Atalanta.

The latter saw two bids arrive from West Ham for his services, which has been reported on before, one that was just a dry loan worth €2m up front, while the other was €32m for a permanent transfer.

These were said to have arrived ‘on the gong’, meaning right at the very end of deadline day, but with little time to find the adequate replacement and get their own deal over the line, the Serie A side refused.

Well, just over a week later, Zapata has injured himself quite seriously, and it’s believed his season could be over.

Gazzetta dello Sport explain that while Atalanta have not fully confirmed the extent of the injury, it’s already known it’s ‘serious’ and ‘the stop will be long’.

Having just come back from a 50 day absence, this appears to be a relapse, and ‘it will be necessary to assume an absence at least as long: at least two, if not three, months’.

There is also a ‘worse hypothesis’, which is that those 2-3 months ‘may not be enough’, meaning more time on the sidelines, but that will only come to light after further investigations.

A bullet dodged for West Ham, perhaps, although whether he would have injured himself had he transferred to London Stadium is something we’ll now never know.

West Ham transfer plans include toss-up as Moyes raves about potential deal

The summer window at West Ham could prove interesting as David Moyes raves about Alphonse Areola, though another goalkeeper is in the frame.

West Ham are in stellar form this season by most metrics. Indeed, the Hammers sit fifth in the Premier League, and have made it through to the knock-out rounds of the Europa League.

Moyes’ side also made it to the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, before being dispatched by Tottenham.

The goalkeeper rotation is something that has benefitted West Ham this season. Paris Saint-Germain Loanee Areola and long-term first choice Lukasz Fabianski are both quality stoppers.

Areola has been utilised in cup competition, and has impressed greatly. The Frenchman has kept a clean sheet in more than half of his appearances.

As such, there has been speculation over the Hammers signing Areola permanently. Moyes’ high praise for the 28-year-old has added fuel to that fire.

“Lukasz [Fabianski] has been the number one, Alphonse has played really well for us in the main,” he said (via Football London).

“He’s got a great record, not conceded too many goals so we’re really pleased with Alphonse but Lukasz is still number one.”

Indeed, Fabianski is nearly 37 years old. The Pole may not have much time left as West Ham’s No.1.

As such, Areola could make that position his own for years to come should he be signed permanently.
Moyes in toss-up between Areola and Johnstone

West Ham have also been keeping a keen eye on West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Moyes’ side are seen as the front-runners to sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

However, the potential snare of Areola could spurn those plans.

Having two quality goalkeepers battle out for the starting spot makes sense, especially in different periods of their careers.

However, adding a third into the mix would complicate things.

Furthermore, Johnstone has likely rejected West Brom contract offers to become a Premier League No.1. As such, he is unlikely to want to battle with two goalkeepers for a starting spot.

I think we’ll sign Johnstone and wave goodbye to Areola as he’ll cost a transfer fee
