Comics You Used To Read As A Child

For mr it was : Beano, TV comic, TV Century 21, Charles Buchanan's football Monthly, Shoot,Goal,
Jimmy Hill's Football weekly,Scorcher.
Used to spend hours reading them, such good memories. Thanks mum and dad for giving me the money to spend on them, never really appreciated that at the time.

Our Granny used to collect all the ones we didn't get and give us lots of them whenever we'd visit. She made sure she'd get Action to us when our Ma decided it was too violent for us. She loved violent movies and trashy thrillers. Great woman.
I still have tons of 2000ADs in the attic though God knows what condition they're in. Some go back to the 70s.

The commando who used to go into a Raging Fury was Captain Hercules Hurricane in the Valiant.
When I was 7 I bought the first issue of The Hurricane, which was later merged with The Valiant. I chose it because it contained a model of the UK's new wonder plane, the TSR2. It ran for just over a year, and I bought it every week, though it was getting rather lame towards the end.
Anyway, here's a funny thing. It featured a story called "Hurry of the Hammers", about a brilliant goalscorer who played for a team known as The Hammers. And the name of this amazing striker?
Believe it or not, Harry Caine, known as Hurry.

Sgt Heavy: ex-SAS sergeant undertakes secret missions for clients in trouble after setting himself up as a private detective
Ryker: British Dispatch Rider who remains on Crete following the evacuation and fights a one-man war against the Germans using Zundapp Motorcycle he captured and fitted with 2 PIAT's from the huge hidden supply dump in a mountain cave which acts as his base and hideout! He sometimes operates with the Cretan Resistance and finally left Crete and returned to England. He was later to return in a second run where he was sent to Norway to assist the Norwegian Resistance this time equipped with a British BSA M20 Motorcycle armed with American Bazookas.
Harrier Squadron: The adventures of an international squadron of pilots flying the Harrier fighter-bomber during a future World War Three style conflict between the democratic Wesfed (Western Federation) and tyrannical Asbloc (Asian Block), thinly disguised versions of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The continuation of an earlier storyline called Holocaust Squadron.
Iron Annie: the adventures of Kurt Stahlmann of the Luftwaffe and his Ju 52 transport plane during World War II.
Kampfgruppe Falken: Major Heinz Falken leads a Dirty Dozen-like group of German soldiers from military penal battalions. Heinz Falken was the commanding officer of the battalion. He was an ex-panzer commander who had been sent to the penal battalion for not carrying out war crimes to please his Nazi commander during the Blitzkrieg campaign of 1940.
Killer Kane: Squadron Leader Kane of the RAF during and after the Battle of Britain.
Union Jack Jackson: a British Royal Marine serving with the US Marine Corps in the Pacific campaign during World War II. To distinguish himself from his American comrades Sgt. Lonnegan and G.I O'Bannion (when using American equipment) he painted a Union Jack on his helmet, hence the character name.

And all the Marvels, with the newsagent delivering Avengers on the day it arrived. On the DC side I quite liked Teen Titans and Firestorm the Nuclear Man.

As a nipper back in the '50's it was Watch with Mother in the afternoons on the BBC with my Nan. If my memory serves me correctly Monday was Picture Book; Tuesday was Andy Pandy; Wednesday was the Flower Pot Men;
Thursday was Rag Tag & Bobtail and Friday was the Wooden Tops.
I graduated to reading a comic when I was about five (1957). It was Jack & Jill. Later moving on to the Lion, Dandy and Beano. After catching the West Ham bug it was Charlie Buchan's Football Monthly.

Roy of the Rovers, (did they use to do a summer special, a bumber edition?, think I've still got a few somewhere)
2000 AD, I remember wondering what it would actually be like in 2000 AD and then thinking "don't worry about it, it's years off"...
Match & Shoot, although class them as MAGAZINES not comics

Some great characters there, the Bash Street Kids, Minnie the Minx, Dennis the Menace, Billy Whizz, Desperate Dan from the Beano and Dandy.

I used to drive a fella to the Hospice who had literally thousands of comics many of which were 1st editions he was always at auctions God knows how much his collection was worth !
Sadly he eventually died and his family had his coffin covered in comics which was I'm sure he would have loved.

The WWII ones (Achtung! Take that Tojo!)
Then graduated to 2000 AD which was such a good creation and perfect for the times. I had the first two years of that all nicely packed up in a box including all the give-aways - even remember making a board game that came with one including some of the main strip characters (Judge Dredd and MACH 2 of course) along with Lemuel O'Luftwaffe (Lemmy).
