Moyes: “I see Maxwel giving me a couple of different options, he plays off the left and I’ve watched him play off the right at Lyon, he scored quite a lot of goals off the right. Hopefully, he can do that for us and we’ll give him the chance to do so.”

"Cornet can play anywhere down the left, he aint no striker or right winger from what I've seen."

Half his games last season at Burnley were as a striker. I guess you only saw the other half.

He's played a lot of times as a right winger in his career too. 23 goals and 12 assists in 70 games, which is better than his tally on the left.

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
We have definitely hit the proverbial “glass ceiling”. Cannot attract the top 6 proven quality players that would could be reasonably certain of immediately improving us in a specific position.

The risks then start to increase exponentially if you choose a younger championship player or lad from France, Italy etc. For us the risks are made worse by the fact we had no scouting network of note until a year back and we are now building that. So young foreign players will be more of a risk. I suppose that’s what Onana was.

So Moyes doesn’t want squad fillers but struggling to get proven quality or players recognised of being low risk to improve the squad and team. And because we need them for the first 11 Immediately it’s why we chase a lot of players at CL clubs. The lowball bids are another topic but even meeting financial demands is not enough.

Leicester had a go at trying to get into that next level and hit the financial ceiling. We are not a traditionally successful, trophy winning team that plays in Europe every season and 2 seasons of second / 3rd tier European qualifying ain’t gonna convince most players at CL clubs or with CL aspirations.

We used to be old has been quality players but now want ones in their prime or fast developing young players.

Neglecting the academy over the last 12 years of GSB and the previous failed transfer strategy of Sullivan is going to be hard to overcome.

While I agree with some of that…

Competition for Cresswell? No, replacement for Cresswell. I like the bloke, but it’s become clear he can’t cut it as our first choice LB any longer.

And saying *maybe* an upgrade on Lanzini? I actually think this is one of the most pressing areas. We have zero creativity as an attacking force. It’s a key area for me, Lanzini offers nothing as we rarely have the creativity to unlock a (any) defence. Occasionally Fornals will find a killer ball….

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
Surely Warburton or Nevin or the other backroom staff could have a word with Moyes about lowering his sights with players he is targeting? Do they not have any say in his choices?

As others have said, top 6 players all want Champions league and don't want to come to us. We can't waste the last 2 weeks going after any more of these players.

We need to lower our sights and get players who look at us as a step up or we will end up with no-one else coming.

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
Aside from left back the next priority is central midfield. We need a player with pace, strength and great technique which is why missing out on Onana was disappointing. Soucek is fine in tge squad and team some games but just too slow and lacking a bit with passing accuracy and ball control.

Jasnik 11:18 Fri Aug 12 It was a odd low offer, but perhaps the reply was whatever your offer is, not going there. Very highly rated apparently, maybe too high?

Cornet can play anywhere down the left, he aint no striker or right winger from what I've seen. Looking forward to seeing him though, he's fuckin lively.

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
That Nunez one was strange.

What is his value 40Mil , we offer 25mil but the reason the bid failed was he didn't want to come to us?

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
Cornet, vexed? Can play across front 3 and as a top man.

That’s all fine by me Surf if we weren’t mean’t to be pushing ourselves for a top 6 place. That’s mid table at best imo….

In my opinion our t/f priorities this window were as follows

1) Striker - done
2) Goalkeeper - done
3) CB - done
4) Replacement for Noble - done
5) Replacement for Yarmo - done
6) Competition for and eventual replacement for Cresswell
7) other nice stuff

Personally, I see losing Masuaku, Kral and Vlassic as a big fat zero. They rarely played and were useless when they did. Cornet, Coventry and kids replaces the lot of them for me.

I now see our priorities as:

1) Competition for etc Cresswell
2) Short term cover at CB - we have four CBs, all decent, sadly 3 or them crocked. Let's not waste a fortune on this.
3) More nice stuff - that might now include a CB immediately and get rid of Ogbona or Dawson in Jan. Maybe some more striker cover.
4) Possible upgrades on an in and out basis (Lanzini, Benrahma?)

I'd like things to be moving faster, as we all would, but we are getting there. Some of the knicker-wetting on here is laughable.

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
Cresswell is finished, he has been since he came back from the injury last season. He was lucky he was up against the slow and off colour Foden, he'll be targeted most games.

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
Agreed SOH Think he is a good player as you say might even be a midfielder in the future

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
I do worry sometimes about Johnson's concentration sometimes in his defensive duties to be played as a centre back but that is most likely his age as most youngsters have worried me even Declan & Rio at times when he first started there. Luckily Rio had Slaven barking orders and Declan just stepped up....so there is a few positions Johnson could make his own.

gpike 9:48 Fri Aug 12
Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
I an see johnson being a good center half in the future. He is OK in he air and his week point being the distribution is not important

Re: Official Transfer Rumours and Gossip Thread
I've liked Cresswell's presence.... been a great player for us but he got exposed last season, and in the first game this season he was up against a team where we put 11 men behind the ball he's more than capable in those circumstances of course the target for them was going to be Johnson being as he's not exactly an experienced centre half so the right of our defence was always going to be their aim......getting in a younger version of Cresswell would be ideal you'd have to be a numpty to not want that.....

Sir Alf . The club has obviously done it plenty of times . Even under this mob . If you're ambitious you will get there .

We didn't play 3 CBs against City. The fact is we played a flat back four and City mostly attacked the other full-back.
