Cowdenbeath v Bonnyrigg Rose – Play Off Final

Cowdenbeath have been relegated from the SPFL following a 4-0 aggregate defeat against Bonnyrigg Rose.
The Blue Brazil slipped to a 1-0 reverse on Saturday, with a Neil Martyniuk penalty enough to ensure there would be no miraculous comeback in the pyramid playoff final.

The real damage was done seven days prior as the Lowland League champions claimed a comprehensive 3-0 victory at New Dundas Park. Roared on by more than 2,000 supporters, that game underlined the potential of the Lothian outfit.

And Robbie Horn’s men will deservedly take their place in League 2 next season.

By contrast, Cowdenbeath — who joined the Scottish Football League in 1905 — face a challenging future in the Lowland League.

Would be good if everyone in the COO DIASPORA could raise a glass in recognition of Maurice's efforts at 7 pm this evening. (Or as close as after, if you're still eating).

Closer to the action, a stunned silence has put a pin in the bubble of the usual Friday frivolities at Wee Jimmies.

My kneejerk reaction is to think we've got to trust the wisdom and words of Donald Finlay, and get behind Donald and everyone at the COO, in their slow but constant long climb back to former glories.

Later though, I may decide to smash up a pub in honour of Maurice and uncontrolled anger at his unfair dismissal.

A day on and I still can't properly take this in.

This is the kind of stuff that you have to take time to process.

What a shocker ! An announcement that will shake football globally to its very core. No manager is safe nowadays.

CLUB STATEMENT

Cowdenbeath FC and Maurice Ross have agreed to part ways in order to allow the process of building for next season to begin. The Club wishes to thank Maurice for all his hard work and the total commitment he has shown in his efforts to develop a squad which could take us forward in our determination to return to the SPFL at the earliest opportunity. He leaves behind foundations upon which we can and must build.

We wish him and his family all the very best for the future confident in the knowledge that he has a long career in football ahead of him.

We can advise that Colin Jack has accepted an invitation to take up the post of interim manager.

Club Chairman Donald Findlay said, “I am saddened to see Maurice leave the Club. I am personally grateful for his constant striving to create a better future for us. I know from first-hand experience that he is an outstanding coach and a thoroughly genuine and decent human being. It has been a true privilege working with him and to be able to regard him as a friend. I wish him every success in the future."

-----------------------------------

MAURICE’S STATEMENT

"I am immensely proud of my time at Cowdenbeath. The circumstances we have worked under these last 17 months have been quite incredible. It has made me appreciate the work that goes into keeping clubs like ours afloat. I have forged many wonderful relationships and I will always look back at my time in Fife with a warm heart.

The time has come to move on and allow the club to prepare for next year under new stewardship. The building blocks are there to develop this young squad.

I wish my chairman Donald Findlay nothing but success. A more passionate, loyal and warm chairman you could ever ask for.

Thank you to everyone for the unwavering support my staff and I have been given.

Thank you."

The COO should turn round and say the matchball has been lost now and send him a hamper of fruit.

On The Ball
Posted March 19, 2023
We have been in touch today with our friends at Berwick Rangers FC regarding ‘ballgate’ and have arranged for the match ball to either be collected by one of their local players or we will send it down to Berwick to be passed on to Liam Buchanan in respect of his hat-trick feat.

For the avoidance of doubt the Cowdenbeath kitman was not involved in the matter at all.

In such situations a simple request relayed to the Cowdenbeath FC secretary after the game once the teams are all settled back in the dressing rooms is probably how these matters can best be handled.

Cowdenbeath 0-4 Berwick Rangers

A dreadful display from Cowdenbeath saw Stuart Malcolm's side head back over the border with all three points.

Berwick took the lead in the 10th minute when Graham Taylor found Liam Buchanan in the penalty area with Buchanan finishing low across Farrell.

Buchanan got his second of the game from the spot in the 40th minute after Jordan Armstrong had needlessly fouled Cammy Graham inside the area.

The former Blue Brazilian completed his hat trick in the 66th minute. David Ferguson headed the ball goalward from a corner and Buchanan chested the ball before hooking it past Farrell.

Substitute Lewis Allan added a fourth in the 82nd minute to compound a miserable afternoon for Maurice Ross' side.

TEAM : Farrell, Walker, Armstrong (Sinclair), Young, Robinson, Love (Ritchie), Garrad (Murray), Berry, Watt, Cunningham (Slaven), Newman

SUBS NOT USED : Lemon, Ruddy, Struthers

NEXT UP : We visit The Falkirk Stadium on Saturday 25th March to take on East Stirlingshire.

It's true. A two match unbeaten run can often be quite unsettling to a squad. Agents swarming all over the place.

I wonder if the team will take this as a reality check?

Things maybe got carried away a little with the unbeaten run?

Let's take the positives and move on.

The deficit doubles, just before half time.

Will have to dig in a little second half. I wonder if any of the new signings will inspire a second half comeback? One of them could make a name for themselves this afternoon.

Interesting 45 minutes ahead.

MATCH PREVIEW - BERWICK RANGERS (H)
Posted March 18, 2023
It’s a second successive home game as we welcome Berwick Rangers to Central Park with a 3pm kick off.

Our previous meeting with the Borderers this season back in October saw a 2-1 defeat at Shielfield Park. Sam Newman gave us the lead three minutes into the second half before Lewis Barr equalised in 85 minutes before Liam Buchanan grabbed the winner two minutes later.

Apart from Buchanan other former Central Parkers in the Berwick squad, managed by one time loanee from St Johnstone Stuart Malcolm, are captain Jamie Pyper, Graham Taylor, Jamie Stevenson and Cammy Graham, who started the season with us before being transferred south. One of our many pre season trialists Griffin Sabatini stated the season with Berwick but has moved onto East Stirlingshire.

Until last Saturday the Borderers had been on a six game winning run and in total eight without defeat before going down 3-2 to Caledonian Braves at Alliance Park.

The Borderers currently sit in sixth place in the table with 52 points from 32 games.
