Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
Must have been new year's eve 88 or 89, I was back visiting my parents at Christmas, me and my mate were down the pub having a few. The front door bangs open, and this big burley bloke in a black jacket sticks his head in, looks around, disappears again, before returning seconds later with another big bastard in a matching black jacket, and a little fella. They escort him to the bar, all order a pint. And either side of the little fella, proceed to drink their pints in silence. I go up to the bar to get the drinks in, "alright Lester" says I, he puts his finger up to his lips, does a little shhhh, and gives me a wink and a smile. Stradishall prison was only five miles away, and he had somehow managed to buy a night out.

Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
Piggott's parsimony, which ultimately led to a prison sentence for tax evasion, was the stuff of legend.

Associates would recount the story of a jockeys' valet who whispered in his ear: "Lester, can you lend me five pounds?" Piggott indicated he could not hear, so he whispered in his other ear: "Can you lend me 10 pounds?" to which the jockey replied: "Try the five-pound ear again."

Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
Lester's wife went to visit him in prison and he gave her the name of a horse and told her to back it for him. When she asked if he wanted to pay the tax on his stake, he replied:

"No don't bother love, I'll just do another week in here".

Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
Undoubtedly the greatest.

Watch the way he won the Derby on Sir Ivor - hands and heels - as Sandy Barclay said " When he went by me it was like he'd just jumped in "

Here's a link to a good story from Sir Mark Prescott in today's RP

A true sportng gent.

Back in the 60's,my old dear couldnt stop having a bet even tho we had less than fuck all. Whenever she had a shilling on a Piggot ride and it lost she would refer to him as that 'skinny mumblng bastard'.

Makes me smile now.

RIP Mr Piggott.

Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
A truly great jockey.

Back in the late 60s I had a seasonal job selling Cigarettes and Confectionery from mobile kiosks at big outside events. I went to many horse racing venues.

At the end of a days racing Lester Piggott would often come to the kiosk to buy a packet of Nestles Chocolate Croquettes which with his speech impediment was a bit of a struggle for him. If we had a busy day and stocks were running low I would hold some back for him. Always seemed a decent bloke to me.

May he Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory

Re: Lester Piggott has completed his final furlong.
Friend of mine just sent me this:

In about 1980 I saw Lester Piggott in the lounge of the Grosvenor House Hotel

Immaculate suit, Smoking a cigar, glass of champagne on the table.

His autobiography was for sale in the hotel shop so I bought it and then went up to ask him to sign it approaching from the front so he couldn’t pretend he couldn’t hear me (that was my father’s advice)

He looked me up and down…..

“ I don’t sign autographs normally but I suppose I’ll have to seeing as how you bought my book….”

He handed it back

“Now it’s worth more than u paid for it”….

He smiled and threw me a wink

What a legend

Nice of the BBC and Sky to mention his year in prison nice and early into the story of his death.
