Best in the World in Their Position at the Time
How many times has West Ham has the best player in the world in their position…..even for just a very short time?

Can we make an 11 ?

I’ll put it out there that Declan is right now and will be for a number of years.

I’ll also boldly state that for a brief period, including a European championships, Payet was the best in the world in his position.

How many more have we had and when when were they?

Cannot include players that might have had a brief moment as the best in the world before joining us or after leaving us - ie Rio at Man Utd and Paulo Futre at Porto

Over to you

Yes, l think Brooking was world class, we really missed him (and Keegan) at the World Cup, 82 l think. They both had been injured and came on as subs in our last match.

Phil Parkes was pretty good at the time, BobbyMoore is a given, as said begrudgingly Payet for a short time, Tevez for his short time and maybe Di Canio but for being a bit erratic.

Rio played with a great freedom when he was with us
It was great to see him bringing the ball out of defence and setting up attacks.
On the occasions he lost the ball he had the pace to recover the situation.
He seemed to glide across the pitch and was a pleasure to watch.
When he left for Leeds & then Man United he became a better all round defender but more regimented in terms of bringing the ball out of defence.

Rios might've been the best U-23 in the World in their position at the time...

Of the World Cup three, I think Moore.

Hurst is a maybe, Peters a lesser maybe.

Both benefitted from the understanding they had with Moore.

Anyway, HTF didn't we win more with one definite, and two contenders?

Trevour Brooking. Favourite ever West Ham player. Underrated all throughout his career. Was close to world class for couple of seasons, and for England when he linked up with Keagan, and for instance better than Hoddle - more end product imo (I saw both play live many times).

McAvennie - for a season

Bilic was top class

Tevez

Mascherano

Wouldn't you have to know what every top level player in the world in any particular position, was like to make that call. Having said that, i believe that Bobby Moore was the best, but can not prove it.

Alan Devonshire was the best player ever to play for West Ham.

Fact.

Re: Best in the World in Their Position at the Time
In the game that cost Man Utd the title, Miklosko was the best keeper in the world at that very moment. I think he earns his spot in the 11

Di Canio with his goal of the season, he was the best forward in the world at that very moment. He is in the 11

Gk - Miklosko

RB - Stewart

LB - ?

CB - Dawson

CB - Moore

RM - ?

LM - Payet

CM - Rice

CM - ?

CF - ?

CF - Di Canio

I’m not sure Ashton cuts the mustard

Miklosko early 90’s must have been up there, even Fergie wanted him before they bought Schmeichel

I reckon if Alan Devonshire had never got injured he would have been up there as a left winger.

Re: Best in the World in Their Position at the Time
Bobby Moore for sure

Paolo was probably top ten

Payet was probably top five

Sir Geoff Hurst at his peak was probably top five

Re: Best in the World in Their Position at the Time
Certainly Moore, possibly Payet and Peters, other than that we are struggling. To be fair there's a handful of clubs in the entire world that could fill an eleven with this criteria.

Taking off the claret and blue specs, probably none.

What position was Payet, he tended to roam although it seems left wing was his preferred position?

Nope can’t do it, nearly all of them have never graced a World Cup finals or even been a CL regular…..
