Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
I personally think the Moyes inability to change tactics has cost us not only this season but the latter part of last, the dithering in the January transfer market could well have cost as at least a Europa spot , without a plan B Moyes is not tactically minded to that us further.

That’s bang on about soucek
Winds me up when people say he’s knackered he’s played too much his form is just a dip.
His general play has been exactly the same in the two and half seasons he’s been here.
He’s very very slow he can’t pass he can’t dribble he doesn’t get many tackles in because he’s so slow. He very good at defending our box and in before last season he was excellent at attacking the box. Now he can’t hit a bath door and 5 or 6 goals a season don’t negate his massive deficiencies where as the 13 he got in his first season made it worth have a central midfielder that can run pass dribble or tackle

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
What sums up this season so far for me is the 1st half at Spurs, Coufal started to make a run into a lot of space down Spurs left hand side but I could see Moyes screaming and gesturing at him to stop, which he did and when he did get the ball he knocked it backwards to the centre half and walked back shaking his head.
Now I know Coufal is limited and there was every chance that he would have checked back to try and find Soucek to pass to and then lose the ball but he just seemed confused by it.

I don't think Soucek''s general play has changed much just that 2 seasons ago he was scoring goals and now he ain't.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
I also think Souceks is a big problem for us now that teams have worked out his novelty element of size and strength.

He is not good with the ball - at all - and does all of his best work either off the ball or with one touch (often a header) as a threat from set pieces.

But if you want to retain possession and build play through midfield, he's not the man to have in the position Moyes forces him into. His passing is poor, his first touch not good enough play pass-and-move football through midfield and his passing-related vision is not great. He's a strong runner and tireless (works his socks off). But that's all off-the-ball stuff.

So I'm afraid he merely adds to the problem of us not being able to work players closer to our central striker while we're in possession of the ball. He can make a run off the ball and be a target for the usual lumpy crossing we have. But at the moment, we're too often playing three central midfielders deep, picking up the ball off their back four, who turn and see their only central striker some 40 yards away every time, marked by two centre-halves.

Add two deep-lying wider players (Moyes likes to get them behind the ball if possible) and you can see we often have no (forward) outlet capable of retaining the ball when we break on teams or try to build possession more patiently.

We're very predictable because every opposition manager knows we're going to pack the midfield in front of our defence. We're not a goal-scoring threat often enough.

I do think it's down to the fact Moyes can't get his message across. 4-3-3 on the front foot at home should be the norm and the 4-1-4-1 that I mentioned away from home.

Both systems can be played positively on the front foot but he doesn't know how to do it. He would like to and I suspect it's the picture that he has in his head - but clearly something has been lost in translation on the training ground.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
Personally, I don’t want to see Paqueta picking up the ball anywhere near his own box.

We need to push him as far forward, as the apex of that midfield trio, as possible, so that he’s the constant link between midfield and the striker, and is in the final third of the pitch more regularly.

Surely that’s what we paid £50m for? We’ve got two fucking huge lumps in Rice and Soucek to protect the defence and pick up the ball from deep. Although I’d try Downes ahead of Soucek to improve our passing/ability to keep the ball.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
The biggest problem we’ve had, apart from ‘just’ playing very poorly too often, has been that our sole striker is almost always cut adrift and isolated under Moyes. Because he’s naturally a defensive-minded coach, so he demands seven or eight behind the ball at all times.

Other coaches can coach the one-upfront model, with two wider attacking support players, much better than Moyes because they’re prepared to let those wider players get forward - and closer to the centre forward - more regularly.

Moyes too often leaves our central striker alone, often away from his closest team-mate by about 20 or 30 yards, for most of the game. It’s too static, too easy to cover (mark) defensively and asks too much of that central striker.

IF we’re going to play one down the middle, we have to work harder to get the likes of Bowen and Benrahma/Cornet - and especially Paqueta in the 10 role - closer to that striker.

We’re just not a consistent threat otherwise.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
Euse,

System-wise, that’s kind of how Moyes has often played - particularly on the counter. And it hasn’t really got us very far this season, because teams have worked us out.

What you’ve outlined is really what needs to change.

We could play the system better, granted. And I guess that’s the bigger point you’re making. But 4-1-4-1 or 4-5-1 is kinda’ what has got us into this trouble. We need to commit to 4-3-3 a little more regularly, to give us greater scoring potential, or try two upfront. We’re just not troubling sides enough, despite spending a fortune (by our standards) on attacking or so-called creative players.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
I would line up with a 4-1-4-1 formation keeping the lines tight in between. This may seem defensive but of course is devastating in short bursts on the counter when it becomes a 4-3-3.

This is what I believe Moyes would like to do but he's just not good enough to implement it. A man's gotta know his limitations as somebody famous once said.

Soucek isn't as bad as we think. He just needs to be the man that sits in front of the defence and breaks up play and gives the simple pass. At the moment he is a headless chicken who doesn't know what his true role is. That is down to the manager expecting him to be a cross between Lothar Matthaus and Diego Maradona.

you know what 'pairing antonio with scamacca' means, you thick Irish shitbag? playing them as a two up front. in that line up I had antonio wide right, something he did for consecutive years before bowen arrived. I bet you couldn't wait to post that, you fucking sad bastard

I agree with virtually everything you wrote but it was hard to read without punctuation.
I think the last year has got to him.
Success he can't handle. A coincidence that the U23's and first team were at the top of their leagues but have come crashing down. He's destroyed most of that now. Youth players wanting to leave when the see no path after doing so well. Both Coventry and Downes had a good preseason. Two years running for Coventry when he's been better than quite a few. Treatment of Vlasic,Kral and Benrhama horrendous.
He has to go as he's done the damage now. He's been lucky in Europe but screwed the easiest chance of winning a European trophy we will have for a long time.
Go Now please

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
Yes we are not playing well and the signs have been pretty bad for a long time
We played well against forest for an hour and against spuds and villa for a half but other than that we’ve been truly awful even in the games we’ve won against much weaker teams in Europe we’ve not actually played well.
The transfer strategy is laughable we sell our only striker two years ago and after two years we’ve gone and bought exactly the same player, we’ve had one leftback since Moyes came back and cresswell has needed replacing for well over a year and we’ve somehow ended up with somebody worse. Brighton lose their leftback and within a week or so they’ve identified a player gone in and got the deal done but. As cording to Moyes there’s just nobody available.
We’ve signed 8 players for 180 million quid and I can honestly say from watching them all over the last 11 games I’m not sure one of them gets in last seasons team, how is that even possible when you look at sone of the dross we have in the team like cresswell Soucek and fornals.
If you add in the treatment of benrahama who lets be quite clear has been by far and away our best attacking player this season although tbf that’s not saying much throw what he has said and how he’s treated Downes I just don’t understand what purpose that serves to cunt off players that are playing well the fact after he put in probably our best midfielder performance of the season all be it against a championship quality team then for him not to get a single kick in the ensuing weeks wreaks of rank bad man management especially when you see how poor Soucek is.
He looks like he’s completely lost his way personally I’d give him a bit more time but I feel he’s so stuck in his ways I’m not convinced he has the ability to change. You only need to listen to his interviews where he talks about giving the likes of scamacca time to learn what we do when it’s clear and obvious to anybody who’s ever watched a football match that he cannot play like Antonio with scammaca and Paqueta the team need to change for them if you want them to be successful. Personally I don’t think he has that in his locker but tbf I didn’t think he had the last two seasons in his locker so I guess we’ll see over the next few months.

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
Reading eusebiovic's article on Moyes time at Real Sociadad is like deja vu! Here's another familiar paragraph...

"It wasn’t to be: they started the season with two goalless draws, followed by a 1-0 defeat against Real Betis. Next up was a 3-2 defeat at home against Espanyol. Still, the performances weren’t as bad as the two points from four games suggested. After four more matches, they were on six. “Moyes go home” rang the chants from the terraces. They were courteous enough to translate it for him.

By the time of his sacking, his team ranked 14th for shots on goal and dead last for shots on target. The idea was to implement a more British style at the club: “I want to play fast, the ball moving, energy,” as he put it. Instead, the end result was confusion on the pitch."

Re: Moyes , should he go or should he stay now
Ha ha ha ha! Thanks for that eusebiovic but this sentence amused me...
".. .their goal was to return to continental football, and after missing out on transfers in the January window due to paperwork delays, they provided Moyes with enough money to put together the most expensive squad in the club’s history."

There’s lots of things to bash Moyes about that he actually deserves but that’s a load of bollox.
Onana was on 15k a week and had started nine yes NINE top flight games and he wanted over hundred bags a week. We quite rightly would pay that and I didn’t see anything yesterday that told me we were wrong I’ve seen him three times now and he’s done very little in the games I’ve watched

Miike, I haven't disagreed with what you've said, and under a different manager who wants the team to play football, then it's a different debate. But even with the shit tactics and horrendous footballers around him, his use of the ball has been below par, but I'm one that does think he'll come good eventually.
